  1. This can only be a good thing on Universal Wants a Slice of Apple's iPod Pie · · Score: 1

Why just the other day I was thinking to myself, 'There ought to be an easier way to give my money to UMG.' This sure beats taking out a fin, finding an envelope and stamp, digging out an address, and making the trek out to the mailbox. Let's face it, the Universal Music Group DESERVES our money. Sure I don't listen to Ashlee Simpson, Lindsay Lohan, or the Doggy Style All Stars but who am I to say where my money should go? And why on earth should an independent society for artist rights like ASCAP, BMI, or SOCAN be responsible for distributing money collected from what is essentially a blank media tax? They'll just divy up the money to artists and music publishers according to boring, measurable criteria like record sales/radio play, etc. I want my money going directly to the LABEL to do whatever they see fit with no public oversight! Maybe the artists don't need the money this month and the coke-head A&R guy needs it instead? Did you ever think of that? Thank God UMG is FINALLY standing up for its rights and Microsoft had the good sense to listen when it agreed to implement a UMG tax in the Zune! Apple, pay attention, or I'll just have to mail the money I was GOING to spend on a new iPod directly to UMG instead!

"Computer Controlled" specifically means that the parent computer is the interface to which the attached device responds. Actually the patent makes explicit in the section "Variations In The Preferred Embodiment ":
One skilled in the art will recognize that it is not essential to have the computer system separate from the media playing device. It is conceivable to have the computer system physically incorporated in part or in whole into the media playing device.
That makes the claim a little more interesting. Countering that, it is also an explicit claim of the patent:
    3. A method of enabling a user to select a song, which is stored in a music data base, that will be played on a player piano that is controlled by a computer, wherein the method comprising the steps of: ...
So it may all come down to whether or not iTunes can control a player piano. Of course I'm not a lawyer.
  5. Re:Too expensive/not useful on New Apple iPod with Photo Capabilities · · Score: 2, Interesting
iPods aren't very useful for people who don't have a lot of music and I imagine the iPod Photo won't be all that useful to someone without many photos.

As someone who has 15000 photos sitting on my Powerbook, I think this would be a great way to make more use of my collection.

The key benefit isn't that it simply stores the photos, or hooks up to a TV. The benefit is that it can store *massive* amounts of photos, organizes them in a way that you can find them when you need 'em, makes it highly portable, and gives you an easy way to output to a large display without having to burn a disc.

Apple's not trying to get everyone to upgrade, the plain ol' 20 and 40 GB models are still available. Rather, they're bringing the benefits of the iPod to those who love photography.
