Sorry, what? When you have a net worth in the hundreds of millions, that's money that you have, not somebody else. Economics is a zero-sum game: if someone is rich, that means several other people must be poor. A social welfare scheme provides a safety net to those with nothing -- it rarely provides them with a comfortable sum. I grew up in the UK, with its welfare state. I went to a high school with a massively underprivileged intake. You think the benefits disincentivised them from looking for work? Does that include the dinner tokens that the kids got so that they could have a decent lunch every day? When a fall in the playground became a disaster because their parents wouldn't be able to replace the torn jacket or trousers?
I was never poor, but I've seen what it does to people, and believe me: benefits really aren't the source of the problem.
Naw... Zombies don't need marrow. It's when you're reanimating skeletons that you need to start thinking about that. Not that I'd know, because I don't practice the dark art of necromancy.
(Igor, do you think I got away with that, or do I now need to unleash my undead hordes on the Slashdot readership?)
Mikhail Gorbachev, the Soviet head of state and dedicated communist who conducted the final stages of the Cold War against the U.S. and other NATO countries, received the prize in 1990.
Mikhail Gorbachev, who ended the Cold War, you mean? Do the words "perestroika" or "glasnost" ring any bells?
Yes, he was a leftie, but he genuinely sought out peace.
Wha'ts wrong with it? How is this different from selling the family house after the parents are deceased?
I think the objection is not to the sale itself, but to the alleged motive for the sale. Selling one's inheritance is not objectionable, unless you do it under the pretense of funding a philanthropic institute with "part of the proceeds" to get the sales price higher.
Exactly. This. It's just so bloody disingenuous. If I want to give $50K to charity, I'll give 50K to charity. But I sure as hell won't pay someone 200K just for the privilege of being allowed to donate.
Sell, or donate. It's as disingenuous as the bottles of stupidly overpriced designer waters that advertise themselves by saying they will give a penny to building wells in Africa for every £3 bottle you buy...
The problem is that anyone who manages to log onto your laptop has access to your Google Drive account (expected behaviour). And anyone who has access to your Google Drive account has access to everything Google... including Google Wallet. I was online when this change was applied. I'd connected to Google via the Google Drive application (because I couldn't remember my password) before navigating through to Google Wallet. It didn't strike me at the time just how dangerous a security hole this is. A few minutes later I was asked to log in properly, so I had to reset my forgotten password by phone alert. But a malicious hacker would have been able to change that too, and I might have worked away for various clients for a month before I discovered that the money was no longer reaching my bank. (Online language teaching, small value payments -- Google and Paypal are the only viable options.)
Oh dear. He's not blaming it on Romney. He said people said that this would happen if he voted Romney, and it did, even though Romney didn't win. He was making a not-particularly-subtle(-so-I-don't-know-how-you-missed-it) point about politics. I'm not sure if it was "Obama supporters are hypocrites" or "it doesn't matter who you vote for, the government always wins", but he clearly wasn't blaming Romney.
Comrade, the people that the army kills are not real people.
Exactly. After the American Civil War, it was discovered that humans actually don't like killing humans. This means that we now need to train our soldiers to stop thinking of the enemy as people.
The problem is, when we send troops overseas, the people we're defending look like the people we're defending them against, and as the people we're defending them against are no longer "people" in the soldiers' eyes, the people they're supposed to be defending become dehumanised too. See also "civilian casualties in Vietnam".
What are you talking about? Fear is big business worth trillions. It's a form of conditioning that actually becomes more effective as time goes on. Psych 101
Really? Or is that just something they say to scare you into conforming?
New Hampshire... that doesn't disprove the link between guns and violence. What you've effectively done is identify the second variable: hunting culture. NH is, as I understand it, a very rural, forested area, where lots of people hunt regularly for edible game. What's the biggest urban area in NH? Manchester, population c.100,000. Not big.
The UK as a whole is a pretty good analogue for the states, as we have densely-populated urban areas and sparsely-populated rural areas.
Someone who owns a rifle with the express purpose of having wild turkey at Thanksgiving is very different from someone who owns a Colt revolver for self-defense. This is why so many places control gun ownership by means of hunting permits.
I get that. But when a criminal knows that his potential victim is unarmed, he is apparently more likely to follow through on his attack. Now lets add in the criminal on criminal crime. I wonder how the homicide rate would vary if we eliminated counting gangbangers shooting each other?
On the other hand, when a criminal knows that his potential victim is unarmed, he is less likely to get antsy and react quickly. The best defense against a mugger is to place your wallet and mobile phone in his hand when he asks....
I would like to thank our European ancestors for planting the seed of slavery and colonization... that is the real root of the problem and the one we have to clean up.
Slavery isn't the root cause of racism. Neither the Gypsies or the Jews in Europe were slaves, and look what happened in the 20th century. We've had all sorts of immigration issues in various parts of Europe. We've had recent race riots (many of the most notable ones in England), we've had political parties formed with the specific aim of "sending them back" ("them" being people of African or Asian extraction).
In fact, a reasonable portion of black people in the UK are in fact freed slaves. The UK allowed freed slaves from the Carribean countries to move in (Google Windrush) and there was a fair amount of ghettoisation (they were obviously all very poor) and there are many places where immigrants of specific origins have pooled and settled. And yes, there is violence.
Uh-huh. Because a bunch of guys with assault rifles are going to be so effective when a squadron of M1 Abrams rolls down your street with backup from a USAF Apache flightgroup.
I'm a man, and I hate guns. It sounds as though you're trying to project your self-image onto half of the human race, ie. "I like guns, I'm a man, therefore guns are manly."
That's a rather specious argument. You are an idiot. I know this because of what you wrote. If you hadn't written it, you would still be stupid, but I wouldn't have known it. A hammer is a tool, until and unless you choose to use it as a weapon. A gun is a weapon, until and unless you find some way to use it that doesn't injure, defeat or destroy.
There are very few avian carriers that can safely transport snakes. The only one I'm aware of is the sea eagle. Probably other eagles too, but eagles are large beasts indeed, and an eagle-based internet would be very hungry and expensive. Although it would give us a way to get rid of our overstocks of horsemeat....
Unfortunately, microorganisms aren't exactly rocket scientists....

I foresee that here will be quite some trouble when they finally release the Nexus-6...
Damn, I could use a Pris model.
Don't. There's a major design fault - they turn into men whenever they do rapid backflips.

...and anyone who disagrees with that should take it up with my friends Smith and Weston....

No, they sharehold their servers.
You click "send", to send out the email.
You click "Google"
You click "search" after typing "lawyer".
The next click is the key in the lock of your new cell^H^H^H^Hhome.
And maybe you'll "click" with your new roommate, Bubba.
You've forgotten the mandatory , and elements, and leaving out your doctype declaration is very bad practice.
