Read it. Biggest pile of right wing tripe I've seen since the last time I saw something of Fox News.
Here is an example pulled right from the economics section:
(C) understand the importance of morality and ethics in maintaining a functional free enterprise system; and
(D) understand the poor record of collectivist, non-free market economic systems to deliver improved economic development over numerous contemporary and historical societies.
You do of course understand, this is teaching the kids a subjective, conservative, value judgement and not even a complete one. Governments all over this planet have highly successful socialist programs. Come to think of it, the United States itself has a few socialist programs. I was at the protest yesterday on the steps of the capitol and I will continue the fight against these fundamentalist nut jobs.
The author of the bill has what she believes to be a noble cause. On its surface, stopping cyber-bullying is truly a noble and lofty goal. The problem that emerges from doing it in function is in making a law broad enough to stop it, you also stifle legitimate speech.
Imagine M$ lawyers construing our legitimate criticisms as abuse under this law. As the law treats corporations legally as non-human persons they are granted equal protection. While the suit would never stand, free speech would be stifled at the mere threat of a suit.
In the end, kids will always be bullies or bullied. Whether online or in person, bullies are only given power when we pay attention to them. Rep. Sanchez, as much as I am for protecting children, it would be a bigger injustice to not protect the most sacred right in a free state.
On the flip side of that are teachers who get fired without solid reason when left without tenure. For instance, I live in Corpus Christi, TX. Here in the city named for the body of Christ, non-Christian teachers have been fired without cause when their religious preferences, or lack thereof were discovered. Yet Christian teachers who feel the need to foist their dogma on their students cannot be touched without bringing in the ACLU. History and government teachers often feel the need to refer to Fox News for their information, which anyone with a brain knows is garbage. Evolution is skimmed over at best with the option given to parents to keep their kids stupid by signing a form that keeps them out of that course. Atheist students are picked on regularly by both students and the principal. At least one teacher I know to be Atheist is forced to hide his lack of belief to keep his job. The only Atheist teachers who live without fear are the ones with tenure and even they must tread lightly. This is sad as most polls show that the more educated you are, the less likely you are to be religious.
I'm with you. Most of my non-geek friends are on MySpace so I created an account to keep up with them. My 10 year reunion was organized through MySpace. But every time I pull up a profile my inner web designer dies a little. I use Flashblock to prevent the music from assaulting the ears but these fonts set to 50% opacity over a background of similar color make me want to stab out my own eyes. I have to select the text just to read it and that makes me hurt on so many levels. Why, ye internet Gods, why? Next they will be setting their font to 3px, opacity to 25, with color at #010101 using a background color of #000000. That is when I start hunting Tom with an elephant gun for allowing this.
True, for large values of one and extremely small values of 3...
Seriously, I find much of the battle over this topic hilarious as most of the people posting here are in the field of IT, CS, or some other variant thereof. I would wager that the entire cast of characters here on Slashdot contains less that 1% climatologists.
While you are at it, put on blinders to keep from seeing headlines. When you vote, pick your candidate by names on a dart board. And of course, wear earplugs in case someone discusses the news of the day by the water cooler. Life is full of pain. The news reports said pain. Ignorance may be bliss, but it also means you aren't really living. Without bad news on the headlines comedians would be out of work. As Mark Twain said, "The secret source of humour itself is not joy, but sorrow. There is no humour in heaven."
First, calm yourself. For the record, Iran is in fact batshit insane as proven by its history over the last 30 years. Anyone remember Ayatollah Khomeini? The current leader is not exactly the picture of mental health himself. That said, Iran would never directly use a nuclear device on the United States. Why do that when the multi-billion dollar terrorist movements it supports could easily do it for them with plausable deniability? It would most likely be used against one of the U.S. allies in the region like Saudi Arabia in retaliation for support of the U.S. and Iran would deny all ties to the group setting off the nuke. The cool thing about nukes is, all of the evidence to its origin is obliterated in the blast. Plus, you forget the 79 virgins baloney drilled into the heads of these bozos from birth. "Hmmm, 79 virgins for being blown up in battle with the infidels or life in this sandbox we call a country. Praise Allah and pass the Uranium!"
It would be theoretically possible if the initial mass of the U235 was sufficient and the cascade reaction were set up properly. Of course the device would have to be of massive proportions and the calculations perfect to generate a yield of that magnitude.
I can't give more than a few more data points but, the average ASVAB score for my platoon in basic was over 85. That said, I was Air Defense Artillery (Avenger Crew) and had a 97 on the ASVAB myself. They tend not to let idiots play with the ground-to-air Stingers. Most of us had at least one year of college and had career options in the outside world. Two had been State Troopers, one was an electrician, I was a Systems Administrator, and three were in construction. We all signed to serve our country and have some adventure in the process. That was back in '99. Four of those guys are still in. Three completed degrees and went on to graduate OCS. My enlistment would have ended last Feb. had I not injured my knee in basic. I will stipulate that the men I had the honor of meeting in my short stint in the Army are some of the finest on God's green earth. They may not represent the military as a whole but I would wager they do represent a statistically significant number. I will give you the fact that not all people in the military are the sharpest tacks in the box. To say they are mostly poor and uneducated though is simply not true.
Yes, for the love of God lets be sure and keep the gays out. The last thing we need is troops hangning curtains and getting manicures. Next thing you know they are wearing pink camo with Prada rucksacks.</sarcasm>
I was watching "The Daily Show" a few weeks back and they had a segment on a linguist specializing in Arab languages who was kicked out for being gay. For the counterpoint side they had a government "expert" who helped form the policy on gays in the military. This guy sounded so ridiculous I almost fell out of my chair laughing until I realized morons like him help make policies that effect us all. He started saying gays like to drink each other's urine and there was a high risk of gay rape. He ranks homosexuality right up there with crime and drugs for the fall of society. Of course he is the same breed that makes sales of sex toys here in Texas illegal. Sure, you can buy them as novelty items but if you ask what they are used for and the clerk tells you the real use they can be arrested on the spot. Of course I digress. F'ing radical fundaMENTAList Jesus people. So obsessed with the sex they aren't having they can't stop regulating it. Think about it, they talk about gay sex far more than gays do. Repressed tendancies anyone?
I am with Alex. I had two friends, both female and both National Guard, deployed with their respective companies as supply staff. One was killed when her convoy was ambushed and the other had her truck peppered with landmine shrappnel more than once and was by luck alone unharmed. I may not support Bush's approach to this war but I have nothing but respect for the troops over there. I would be with them myself were it not for a serious knee injury I suffered in Basic Training.
As to the congressional offspring in the military, there are at least 7 members of congress with children on active duty and I would wager more in the reserves and guard.
I think this "special software" would be more accurately described as a series of macros and scripts (in the dumbed down, Microsoft sense of the word) with a simple monitor listening for errors being written to the logs. As we all know, Microsoft logs are often woefully underpowered at recording major system errors. Of course this is a hunch but based on my past experience with Microsoft (dating back to the early days of DOS 2.0)I think it is a decent one.
So not only are you laughing about Uranus having a dark spot (that probably requires a biopsy), you think it is funny to call it giant and infer that it farts alot? That is just plain mean. Wait, we are talking planets...very well, carry on...nothing to see here...
Fact: Iraq never sponsored Al Quada or any other terrorist organization.
Fact: Osama and Saddam were mortal enemies. Maintaining Saddam would have kept the terrorist cells out of Iraq. Now with the power vaccum we created they are flooding in.
Fact: Republicans relied on fear of attack to pass the Patriot act, wiretaps, and re-elect someone who should have been a lame duck.
Fact: Democrats are just as retarded as Republicans. That is why I am independent. Strait ticket voting should be outlawed immediatly.
Fact: The Republican party doesn't have a leg to stand on without the brainwashed sheep who believe our freedoms are a fair price for "security".
Fact: The Democratic party doesn't have a leg to stand on without the brainwashed sheep who think the government can solve all of their problems.
Fact: This post will be modded down by either a Democrat or Republican.
No, seriously, blame the idiot parents who bought their 14 year old kid a game clearly labled Mature and in which the title itself is the name of a fellony. With a name like Grand Theft Auto, did they think it would be about a nice man who races cars and teaches yoga in his spare time? Honestly, there is no content in the GTA series designed for, or fit for anyone under 18.
This kid was 14 so of course content that rough would warp his brain. Most video game vendors in my area won't sell Rated M games to minors without a parent. If the family actually thought this a real concern they should have taken the game away. I personally enjoy the GTA series but I don't even put it in the Playstation until my kid is in bed. When I am not playing my rated M games they get locked up in the safe. That is why the "Hot Coffee" incident made me mad. Anyone too young to see animated porn should really not be playing at carjacking and killing people with golf clubs, guns, swords, flamethrowers, or cars.
Neglectful parents unwilling to take an interest in their child's activities are just asking for trouble. Just like parents need to monitor what movies their kids watch, games need to be paid attention to and the content discussed. If you are unwilling to educate yourself you don't deserve to reproduce.
Then again, how about just blaming the abusive father...
There are two primary shooting wars going on. One is a game of terrorist whack-a-mole that is a sad necessity. The other is a war we started. We went in under false pretences, overthrew a government that while bad was NEVER a real threat to us personally, and now must clean up the mess left behind. The Republicans like to tie this war to the War on Terror but they are in fact completely seperate. Iraq had a habit of killing off its dissidants. All of the dangerous terrorists were coming from places like Saudi Arabia and Syria. Now Iraq is a haven for them. They flow in from over the borders in the contries we actually should be attacking and our troops are sitting targets, to busy playing "build a new government" to go out terrorist hunting. With a giant power vaccum extremist Mullahs rise to power without a fight and spew their hate without retribution.
Instead of sitting down with top Democrats and figuring out a way to stop the division both sides lob more vitrol at each other until we are so divided the terrorists sit back and laugh saying, "Praise Allah, mission accomplished. And Achmed didn't even need to send that other bomb..." Both parties need to be done away with entirely so idiots at the ballot box will be forced to actually figure out who they are voting for instead of going straight ticket.
Of course I have also had the insane idea that there should be an IQ test on every voter registration form. Miss the minimum and your ballot goes in the shredder instead of the box."
I set up a network connection for my friend's 360 and we hopped on Halo 2 to test it. I am admittedly inexperienced with Halo 2 but had a respectable body count with Halo 1. After joining 5 different games I got so annoyed with posers lagging the game and fragging you during lag I wanted to toss the box out the window. At first I thought it may have been my own connection but my ping times proved otherwise. I was pulling full 3Mb and everyone in the game was getting the same lag. Then there were the guys who were in essence un-hitable. I remember sighting them in with the scope for a perfect head shot and not getting a kill. Cheaters are like the flambaiters here, incapable of playing by the rules they decide to muck it up for those with talent, or in the slashdot case an actual point. At least here we can set a threshold.
I think YouTube and MySpace should turn the tables and sue record companies for compensation for promoting their bands. Record companies gain exponentialy from exposure and by suing the people giving them free exposure they are biting the hand that feeds them. I can think of three bands I have purchaced CD's and concert tickets for just from seeing their YouTube video on a MySpace page. Without the free promotion these pages gave I would never have heard these bands. YouTube and MySpace should capitalize on that by charging record companies that decide to get their panties in a wad.
Based on my experience with Microsoft products (which dates to the early days of DOS) they are never quite ready for the production environment until SP1. To judge based on an RC1 is just silly. At home I have already upgraded to a Linux environment and will not need to throw money at Vista. In the office I will be holding off until SP1 before I even start testing our production software on Vista. It is not worth my time or money to go through the hassle of making a Release Candidate my primary OS (which is what is truly needed to shake the bugs out). I don't forsee even considering a switch until January '08, and that is if they release close to schedule.
True, it will reduce it, but will the rate be sufficient to deter the side effects? Consider that most of the world's O2 is produced by algae and phytoplankton in the oceans, not plants, and large populations of phytoplankton and undersea plant life are killed off every year from offshore dumping. Is it even that we are producing more CO2 or is it that we are killing off the filters? Put a smaller filter on your car and the dirt will increase in the engine. The problem is not more dirt outside but that the filter is insufficient to handle that dirt.

Will do. I'll probably need to go to a full-auto instead of an elephant gun though. You know, to cut through the bodyguards...

You are correct AFAIK. More than 5 and you are listed as a dealer.

Correct. It used fission which produces significantly lower yields of force but is still nothing to be trifled with.

Check that. The fully tricked out one I want would likely require a mortgage. Looks like it is iMac time for me after all...
I am looking at a sweet return this year and now know what I am dropping it on...
A dual Xeon Mac Pro with dual 24" monitors.
And you thought I was going to say an iMac...
