Depending on how sensitive the data on the box is, it is sometimes desirable to leave it up to watch what the cracker is doing. Observing a cracker can give you clues out his mo, and what it is he wants to do. This can be valuable in catching him. Or in this case, going after the wrong person.
I believe that the FBI could have been fully in their rights to take ALL computer related items. Including the valuable pr0n collection.
I don't think so. They can only take whats related to the crime under investigation. Its doubtful those porn cds would have helped him hack in. Warrents are supposed to be pretty specific, and if they find something else illegal not meanted in the warrent, they must turn a blind eye.
Possibly. It sounds like an EMP kinda thing. They can knock out the computer in your car with it. I don't know if you'd want to be around on big enough to kill your hd though:)
Of course not. what i'm wondering about though, is that a warrent is for specific evidence for a specific crime. why were they also checking for kiddie porn? Believe me, i don't want kiddie porn to exist as much as the next person, but i also belive very stongly the police need to follow the rules that have been set. If the police are searching your house for illegal copies of a movie and find pot, they can't do anything about the pot (except go back to the judge and say we saw some pot lying around, can we have a warrent for that?). The police must be held to these strict rules lest they begin trampling the rights of all.
Think about this; guilty parties don't freely give police evidence they know is incriminating. Start crying about not wanting to talk and the agents "suspection level" will rise.
So now everyone is innocent until proven guilty? If i am, i don't think i'd need to 'hand over evidence' to prove i'm not.
It sounded like me he just found out what hosts were on the domain, and looked to see what was open. He didnt even attempt to get in. So if i see a body in an ally i'm not to look at it or even see if the person is alive?
Please tell me, how is a zone transfer cracking? It seems to be a way to find out what hosts are in a domain, which i doubt is illegal. Even if it was an attempt at cracking, it would be a poor one, sincei doubt he could suddenly make his IP the DNS server for everyone..
Hey fuckstick, Napster DOESNT control what goes thru thier servers. People can rename files easily. Do you think they should scan the fils to make sure the sound isn't copywrited? If you say yes, then Xerox should also scan whatever its copying and check to make sure its not copyrighted. Got it?
I hate that bitch, but i'm still not buying CDs. Why? I don't like giving money to talentless twits like yourself that do nothing to earn their money. Hey all you WS guys, that includes you too!
And I will NEVER AGAIN vote for a Democrat or Republican candidate.
Thats nice, but what if you ONLY have one choice? In PA for example, for one office, the ONLY choice was republican. Not even a democrate was offered...what is one to do then?
Ya i dont know why he was kept out of the debate. Even if no one wnated to hear what he had to say, he should have at least been allowed to say it. If there's a presidenatal debate, ALL of those running should be allowed to speak. It seems very odd that everyone else was kept out. Makes you wonder what it is they don't want you to hear...
Yup, the law enforces must themselves obey the law. They are not above it either. You seem to think Justice at any cost, but in doing that you will create more wrongs then you are trying to right. And no, i don't want them reading anything on my computer. I have some conversations with my gf on my computer, and i wouldn't want anyone reading them. Not b/c there was anything illegal, but b/c they are personal! There's a differnce between being afraid someone will read something, and not wanting anyone to. Why do you post your address so we can come to your house and snoop through it whenever we want. leave your door unlocked too. After all, what do you have to hide?
its amazing the change of attitude that has occured. Nowadays if you carry a gun even just to protect yourself, you are seen as dangerous, yet years and years ago people thought you were odd if you didn't carry a sword or knife.
Doubtful, since they woulnd't be after the guy until after the fact. i take it that you'd rather be a mindless robot told what to think and belive. 'Policital manipulation' occured in Germany in the 30-40s. Think that was more advantagous then letting a few random killer get away?
tell me, should the firewall open & inspect every piece of mail it gets?
Yes, but just to scan for viruses. My school does a quick check, and if an attachment ends in.vbs, they strip it out and replace it with a message saying someone tried to send on to you. If you know this person and why they did, tell them to resend it as a.txt. Since the first.vbs 'virus', we haven't had any attacks.
I like to set mine to blank. Its much faster then loading a page, esp. if i'm on a modem. And usually i don't have the same task when i start browsing. I think this move by aol sucks, it just makes things slower. Browswers don't seem to want to stop loading page sometimes..
It depends; if it changed IE so that you can't set a new start page, then no that isn't fair. If its only in the aol software, then ya, there's no reason to care. Anyone know if it fucks up IE, or just its software?
OK, it appears that YOU are one of the dopy people who are exporting Windows file sharing to the world.
If you like, i'll give you my IP and you can see just what i have exported.
Well, don't be surprised when some kiddie attacks your Win9X box.
Ya, they can do ALOT of damage getting to my mp3 directory, even had i been exporting it. Even if i were to export it, i'd not be giving just anyone access. My win95 box is VERY secure; i don't have one to break into. The box with the cable modem hook up is linux, and each share can only be accessed by certain users, and from certain IPs. The internet is not in those ranges.
You've got to realize that people who do enable file sharing over a persistent broadband connection in fact ARE inconviencing the rest of us. Why do you think @Home got blacklisted? It's because too many of their users had their boxes cracked and turned into spam relays, and @Home didn't do anything to correct the problem.
Oh, gee silly me thinking it was @Home's mail servers that were open. Or someone incorrectly setting up a mail server. No, they did it ALL with only windows file sharing. Quite a feat i'd imagine. Of course its possible, but to argue that they use that and that alone to do it is higly unlikely. You'd only probably be in real danger if you share your entire harddrive with full access without a password. Since home networks are still fairly uncommmon, i doubt many people would do that. Incidently, why is it my fault that someone broke into your machine and setup a spam rely? Its partly your fault i'd think but most of the blame rightly remains on the person doing the cracking.
Police stations and the FBI were not formed to lobby congress; they were formed to enforce the laws. They are not supposed to have a say in the laws at all, they are just supposed to be robots enforcing them. Once they have the power to affect laws, things start to look bleak indeed. After all, 'hacking tools' are under attack, when many such tools are used for very ligitiment purposes. I agree that an individual police officer does have a right to lobby, the group as a whole does not. They fuction is to stop crime, but left to their own accord they would overstep the rights of many in their effort to do so. Thats why they are not supposed to have a say in the formation of the laws, it is a check to keep police from declaring laws in an overzealous attempt to stop crime.
What does it matter if 1 vote is valid and non of the rest are? I didn't evne know there was onliy once choice until i got the ballot (absentee).

Why? Just b/c you're near it? There are many legit reasons to be around.
It sounded like me he just found out what hosts were on the domain, and looked to see what was open. He didnt even attempt to get in. So if i see a body in an ally i'm not to look at it or even see if the person is alive?

Maybe they're learning about computers? Besides, this wasn't a 12yr old, this was a college student at RPI, very near to me in fact.

But I'M SICK OF PAYING TAXES FOR INTEREST ON OUR NATIONAL DEBT!
well, maybe our taxes wouldn't be so high if MS and other would pay its fair share. Yes, a billion IS fair share for one that makes billions.

Yet tools, knowledge, and large hammers are not illegal.
