    Ya i forgot how reliable NT was found to be when i stranded a Nava destoryer dead in the water a while back. Or how the one windows machine i use seems to need a reboot now and then or "funny things happen." While my linux box never needs fixing...

    I had a full time job over the winter, and they were happy to keep me on while i went to college in another state for spring quarter. We discuess things on the phone, and i implemenet everything here, back it up, and he loads it up on their systems and test it further...its been working great so far. So ya, i think it works.

    Even if you already own the cd? You're saying its illegal to download music that you've already paid for? Whats the difference between the cd version and the mp3 version? any?

    Also, did you stop to think it would be MORE expensive to require these things at isps? How are these /. criminals demanding the tax payer help? If anything the taxpayer will pay MORE taxes trying to stop them.

    Finally, ya i guess its wrong for anyone to make a cola other then coke. I mean, they just stole cokes formula to make a similar thing right? How dare they! And everyone just "stole" fords idea to make a car. And how dare sears make a wrench that i can use to fix my ford car, or modify it or even take it apart and make it into a lawmower if i so chose. The nerve of them.

    True, unless a normal user has some kind of admin power, a little or a lot. But usualy people with that kind of access will know what to look for. So i guess the biggest threat would be a company, if say someone on the sales team somehow launched a virus, it could potentonally damage the sales group files. But for the most part i doubt even that. Anyone know of any unix virii that have run amuck (like moderate to serious damage)? If not, linux is probably say b/c if someone hasn't been comprimised by a unix virus before, i don't think its going to happen. its been around what, 20, 30 years now?

    I don't think usenet is dead. I regually read thru the linux groups especially, i've gotten and given help on them. And i find little if any "noise". No binary attachements either. just people looking for help.

    Thats right...and if you think about it alot of your tax money goes places you don't wnat it to. Defense budget, farmers (to encourage them too keep food supply high so its cheaper for us), and here's a good one, ROADS. These people that say i don't want my tax dollars going to that should think...i could just as easily say i don't want my tax dollars going ot any roads near YOUR house. Or subsidizing YOUR electric (check your elec bill, i bet the govt was involved in lowering it for you).

    ...that Sony states how much money and how many businesses they deal with and how many employee's they have in the very first line? Well i hope the copyright office relizes that all those employees are people too, and that they will also be hurt by the law. Businesses aren't allowed to vote, nor should they be allowed anywhere near the lawmaking process. If buiness had its way, there wouldn't be seat belt or airbags in cars, they'd never inspect air planes, and we'd be getting disease filled food. But what can you expect from an entity thats sole motive in life is greed.

    Ah, but thats where you're wrong. Everyone has a local geek in their neighboor hood, someone that could fix something if they had the source. And even if they can't find them, the open source drivers would probably be fixed by some geek somewhere before the company does (if it ever does). Thats where the power of open source lies, is the fact that there always is someone else out that will do these kind of things.

    Are you an idiot or just stupid? IP in the DRIVERS??? That implies that most of the work is done in the drivers, where in reality it is the HARDWARE doing it...the drivers just tell the hardware what to do. And why should the card makes care if other people can write drivers for the card? They are selling a board, not software. And if someone will write drivers for their board for free, i think they'd be thrilled. I seriouly doubt that the drivers being open source would give the competitor an advantage. Wake up.

    Well, your first two lines totaly discredit the rest of your argument. Yes that extra 100mhz does make a difference, so does HD speak your sound card, MB even regular old ram compared to PC100 or 133 or whatever you might have...they all make a difference. If you truely want to prove something, rip out the card on your 2nd system and put in the voodoo. Then come back with some results. You think anyone here would believe a company doing a benchmark using 2 very different computers? I'd think not, so why do you expect us to accept that from you.

    Well census info from Ancient Greece was lost and cannot be recreated. This is nothing new, we've been losing information for centuries. What about all those really old books that have rotted and will never be read again. Things that have survived have also been mangled to an extent. Do you really think the bible of today is unmodified from when it was first compiled? Kings have rewritten it, copying errors were made, and who's to say that some pages didn't go missing one century. We have and will continue to lose information b/c of technology; there simply is no way to preserve it all. Perhaps this is why we are doomed to repeat history...

    Ya, plus any claim to security would probably be washed down the tubes. Probably something similar to when id released the quake source code...it was not designed to be as secure as possible but the only way people found out about the holes was a source code release. Of course after a few months and patches it would be pretty secure, i'm sure, but until then would be a nightmare.

    Real and hard competition is the only way to fix any industry. The harder companies fight and claw with each other, the better it is for the economy and consumers. Like the poster above i suggest you read up on trusts and their effects.

    Yes they do, otherwise they would have nixed this bill. It specifically allows for that. Did you read UCITA at all?

    Well the difference is the ENTIRE hd was copied, JUST the relivent emails. If it were paper, the police would look through the filing cabinte for very specific papers that contain the evidence, they would not just take the whole filling cabinet. Also, if papers were discovered that uncovered something else illegel (like the person was in the illegel drug business), the police would have to leave them as they do not pertain to the crime on the warrent. In order to use that evidence, the police would have to go to a judge and say while i was looking for this illegal thing, i also found this, may i have a warrent for that now? The office if issued the warrent could then return for that evidence only.

    I'd have to agree. I'm not sure why the gov't cares about this so much either. It should be up to each business/organization to secure their own sysetms. Just as the gov't should be responsible from securing its own systems. Who is responsible if you leave your keys in the car with the door unlocked and it gets stolen? Mostly the owner of the car. You don't get compesated much in that case (or at all) for being an idiot, why should this be any different?
