Well, the 360 is cheaper.. but it STILL has problems like the RROD. Also, the PS3 comes with a BluRay, and games I want to play, unlike the Wii... sadly. RE4 was really good on the Wii I thought (the Wii the first console I've owned since the SNES).... but games that interest me aren't showing up.. STILL. Add in the 360 problems... and it seems my best choice is Wii + PS3 for gaming. (Well, I also have a PSP... so the integration there would be nice as well).
Yes, speed does increase the chance an accident is fatal. The flip side though is that raising speed limits actually REDUCES accident rates. So while the damage will be more if you are in an accident... you're less likely to be in one to begin with. I think lowing the number of accidents goes a lot further than creating situtations where not only are you morely likely to be in an accident, you get to live, but probably at a much reduced quality of life (cronic back pain, paralization, severe scarring, etc).
too many people, driving too fast, making preventable crashes into fatal ones.
No... it's not that speeding leads to accidents. In fact, many state DOTs have done studies that prove artifically lowering speed limits below the 85th percentile INCREASES accident rates. Sadly, some 80% of ALL roads in the US have limits 8 - 12 MPH BELOW the 85th percentile. Mainly because of people like you boiling things down to make catchy phrases to push your agenda.
There's nothing wrong with access rights in Windows. Linux isn't perfect; please stop deluding yourself into believe that Linux is the One True Way to do things.
The difference is that IT and doctors are based in hard sciences. Economists don't have any facts to base their theories on. They sound nice... but can never be proven.
There's nothing wrong with eating at McDonalds in and of itself. What's wrong is all the people that aren't taking account of what they put into their bodies, and how much energy they expend.
You can take something to an utterly absurd degree and then claim that therefore, the thing must be inherently absurd. That doesn't make it true, of course. If it were inherently absurd, you wouldn't need to use a technique like that to show that this is the case. In fact, you can destroy the value and usefulness (for yourself, anyway) of any good idea by doing that. Honestly this is rather silly and it is beneath you, or it should be. That's not an insult because what I am saying is that I believe you can do better than this.
I don't believe I'm taking what you said to an absurd level; rather, I believe you did that yourself. This is your exact quote: "I'd much rather people finally learn, once and for all, to never believe anything they see or hear or read without first confirming it themselves or testing whether it's consistent with what they already know to be true."
I realized that perhaps you didn't quite mean to go that far.. but surely you can see that's not quite what you said? I know the sentiment you're trying to get at... but I'm not sure how practical it can be. I know all news outlets spin so much they get 99% of the story wrong... but at the same time, I'm not sure how any person can live their life and attempt "first confirm [the facts] themselves" at the same time.
You're argument is that you can develop a "skill" to see past the nonsense. I'm not so sure you can, short of going to the source yourself, which is likely too high of a burden. Because of this, I rarely even bother with "the news." For some stories, fine... I don't think you could say Katrina was made up, nor the crashing of the jet in the Hudson river. But as soon as there's any analysis or debate, or if the story involves politics.. you're pretty much left with nothing useful.
I'm not sure Nintendo is much of a factor. Yes, there are a lot of party games. There are few games I'm interested in playing on my Wii. I was considering xbox or ps3.. and decided on the ps3. The main reason is that it also has a blueray player, and there do seem to be games coming down the line for it. Xbox at the same time is trying to steal the people without a console from the Wii. So they are marketing more family friendly games... which is exactly what isn't interesting me right now. Add in the huge problems with the xbox's rrod, and other issues, and the fact that I have a PSP, the PS3 is a clear choice for me.
This is absurd. You may as well just not believe anything you've not witnessed first hand. Do you doubt Katrina happened because you didn't verify it? How did you verify it? Because the same thing was published everywhere? That doesn't seem any better... how many times have ONE outlet gotten it wrong, and the others swarm and re-report the same error? So now you're left with actually going there and seeing the damage for yourself...
It's not possible MS really truely believes they have ligitiment patents which they feel are being violated? I'm really tired of this position where people pretend to really know what another is thinking or what their motives are.
If your manufacturing company hasn't at least experimented with some web applications, I am sorry. It makes things a lot easier in regards to manufacturing engineering design when you do not have to worry about a moving or proprietary platform, or worse proprietary hardware interfaces and magic black boxes.
We have our own in house engineering staff, both software and hardware. They have no problems developing their designs and getting them to our plant using Windows.
A web application can run on the intranet you know, and web programmers are far cheaper and plentiful than C and Java folk. Easier to outsource, in other words. I hope to god you are not a programmer.
I know.. and I would not waste time building a web application for internal use. They suck. Horribly. I don't know why you think they are cheaper. Having to deal with the hacks for lack of built in state management and not being able to control which page the user can navigate to (without extra code) make web programming much more difficult than typical "fat" clients, oh and lets not forget the extraordinarily primitive controls you can use on a page. Yes, I am a programmer... and I'm not going to choose my technology stack based on the latest buzz words. Web is fine if you don't have control of your client workstations; we do, so rich client it is. Since I'm using ClickOnce deployment... updating my application for my users is just as easy as deploying a website.
My contrast to this is my client work I do for my personal business as a consultant, where they WANT web applications. Its much more difficult... and not for my lack of experience. Prior to this gig, I spent eight years doing web development. So I know the ropes.
Um, who said anything about entertainment?
The discussion is about internet radio vs. satellite radio. Yes, that's entertainment. Please try to keep up.
You have one IT guy, lol. If you are not going to invest in infrastructure be prepared to deal with a "standard" substandard interface for years to come.
Just how many IT people would you need for 75 users? Also, its not MY company.. I don't get to decide when we need to hire or not. The owners do.. and yes they are idiots.
I have not had a virus on any computer I have maintained let alone needed to nuke and reinstall everything except due to botched drivers or Windows upgrades.
Yes, you give your users full reign and they are NEVER get a virus. Sure. As I said, if things WERE more locked down, there'd be less firefighting by our IT guy. But the owners know best.
I still think you should find a new job but from the sounds of it you are where you belong. Enjoy the locked computers I hope they are spill proof for your drool, you dolt.
Calling me a dolt when you clearly lack comprehension is pretty funny. My employer isn't perfect, but I'm paid very well and given the freedom to do things properly, and I get to make the technology decisions. My system runs the entire company, and has streamlined their operation. But ya, I must be a dolt.
There's a reason sys admins are paid less than us developers.. sorry you weren't smart enough to hack it in CS.
You're a dolt. We're a manufacturing company, and have no use for "web applications." One of the main problems now is that things AREN'T locked down and a huge amount of time is spent by our ONE IT guy rebuilding computers for people like you that think they know more than they really do. Also, bandwidth costs money, and I understand my company would rather use their T1 for business purposes instead of my entertainment purposes.
Realize that when you choose to focus on unix, don't be surprised when that's all you see. I've seen hundreds of server running Windows, and at my computer we have three servers now with 2008. Not a linux install in site..
Then why is IE still by far the most used browser? Exactly, because it's bundled and because a lot of people wouldn't know how to get on the net without it unless they're offered a 1-click option.
It couldn't possibly be that they don't care about the "improvements" FireFox offers them, could it?
The other thing they did (which is the more stupid decision) was to force hardware vendors to go through an expensive hoop jumping process to have drivers signed by MS. Only signed drivers will work. As a result, many hardware vendors said 'up yours' to MS and as a result you had the shitstorm we all witnessed.
That's not true at all. Unsigned drivers will install; if they don't work though, it's because they haven't been throughly tested enough.
Well, doesn't sound like a great solution then if you can't really use it while you're driving.
Also, I can't run flycast or anything like that on my office pc.. those things are not allowed. I can aim a sat. antenna out the window though. Of course my main reason to keep sat. is not really the music; it's the other programming.
Sirius music channels always sucked.. and now XMers are suffering through that. I don't listen to the music as much... even in the few cases where I like the play list better. The problem is the Sirius DJs, that don't understand their stupid babble was the second most annoying thing about FM radio. The XM DJs were less chatty, and a few were actually good. But now Liquid Metal has an annoying bitch DJ that can't shut her mouth.. and she knows nothing about metal... because she's also on two other channels at other times of the day. Sad really.
In other words there's nothing wrong with the game, you just hate MS.
And your dad is right; you're wasting your time if you exclude Windows based applications.
Well, the 360 is cheaper.. but it STILL has problems like the RROD. Also, the PS3 comes with a BluRay, and games I want to play, unlike the Wii... sadly. Ha. Federal rules already spell out how long yellow light times must be, and cities / states ignore them anyway.
Yet longer yellow light times with no cameras decrease ALL types of accidents.
There's nothing wrong with access rights in Windows. Linux isn't perfect; please stop deluding yourself into believe that Linux is the One True Way to do things.
Yes, Slashdot is in fact a big joke.
So that's you're great solution? Go back to trading in sheep and blacksmithing? Really?
You can take something to an utterly absurd degree and then claim that therefore, the thing must be inherently absurd. That doesn't make it true, of course. Well... would you rather a 10% paycut, or to be laid off? Yes, it's a crumby choice, but I'd also rather work for 10% less then not at all.
I'm not sure Nintendo is much of a factor. Yes, there are a lot of party games. There are few games I'm interested in playing on my Wii. I was considering xbox or ps3.. and decided on the ps3. considering Bruce Perens consults on avoiding licence issues for a living we can take his words seriously.
Nonsense. I've come across enough plumbers that don't really know what they are doing, but still "making a living" at it to know that this isn't true.
It's not possible MS really truely believes they have ligitiment patents which they feel are being violated? I'm really tired of this position where people pretend to really know what another is thinking or what their motives are.

Hmm... I thought XMLM played more stuff that wasn't as mainstream. I don't think i've ever heard slayer as much as it's on now.
Ultimately though my problem isn't with some of the changes in music.. I can take a bad song. A super crappy dj is intolerable.

Maybe the war is over because most people still choose to stick with IE?
