Here's one example. I recently purchased an expensive KVM switch for use at home. The product FAQ, literature and manual all promised "USB Support!" so I didn't give it much though, thinking much the same as you.
Turns out that the console connection is not USB, but PS/2. The USB ports that are provided, however, are useful only in the event that the PCs connected to the KVM lack PS/2 connections. Go figure.
My guess there's lots of KVMs in the field lacking USB support. Also, it's possible that the length limitations for USB vs. PS/2 cables are different.
... wouldn't it preferable to look at a mirror reflection instead?
Don't remember how it was being done, but I recall reading an article a month or two back about how a major hotel chain installed (or was in the process of installing) wall-mounted screens that would resemble mirrors until the screen was powered on.
I don't believe anyone objects to mirrors, do they? Aside from giving you, well... you, they've got that feng shui thing going for them. Digital images, on the other hand, while sometimes looking better than Real Life, lack a certain warmth and can leave you unsatisfied.
Given the prevalence of flashing banner ads on the web, there's an unescapable irony in reading "Our goal is a total print medium where your paper is going to talk." followed by the comment "For now, the technology is available in limited form and in somewhat trivial applications."
So instead of a medium that could take on the form of a PBS documentary, or have the ability to listen to a Peter Jennings voice narrate the text while we're having coffee, we're going to get something more resembling the Fox News meets Entertainment Tonight, or maybe a Scrubbing Bubbles Bathroom Cleanser commercial?
And I wonder how much more we'll all be paying to read our newspapers? Or for those of us pining for the Good Old Days, how much the "Premium Service" newsprint edition will be cost us?

Ask any self-respecting Natalie Portman fan.
