Actually I've found most Americans to be very into their work and enthusiastic about it, sometimes to the point of letting work get in the way of social and family life.

I'm not American and I wouldn't say I hate American people, although there are certain things I dislike about their culture (fast food, SUV culture, guns, software patents and excessive litigation to name a few).

Whatever gave you the idea that PHP, Gaim, Xorg and so on are not real open source projects?
That's not what I said or thought and I'm not quite sure how you inferred that from my post! The point I was trying to make is that people who are really "into" their work will already be involved in projects in their spare time and so would not need anything extra to put on their CVs. They can then spend their summer break doing fun things other than coding. I really don't think it's healthy to spend 365 days a year behind a computer.

Yes you're right. When you've spent all year sitting behind a computer studying or writing code, who could think of anything better to do than spend all summer sitting behind a computer writing code? Presumably this is aimed at same sort of person who closes all the blinds in the daytime and fills their room with artificial light. Besides, all the best students will likely already be involved with real open source projects.

I have a similar experience. I was having a nice relaxing time snorkeling in the caribbean with my wife, cue the arrival of loud USians having a contest of who could be the most whiny and irritating. "GEE THIS IS LIKE *SO* COOL I JUST SAW A HUGE FISH HEY HOMBRE GET ME ANOTHER BEER" "YAH I WISH I HAD MY TRUCK HERE". Why is it most people can talk at normal volume but USians have to shout so that everyone in a 50 metre radius can hear their conversation? It must be that they think they are so important and interesting that they are being generous by allowing others to hear them speak. In reality they are extremely dull and irritating.

I wouldn't say it's utter bullshit, that's probably an over-simplification. As you suggest, it all depends on the state of your mind; it affects different minds in different ways. If you mind is a bit messed up to begin with (e.g. ADD, OCD, PTSD) then it can relieve stress and allow concentration, which in itself is like "expanding your mind". Also, different strains may have very different effects. I do agree with everything else you say.

It's actually quite sound advice. Take the scenario that you are contracted to a do certain number of hours, but often work over that for whatever reason, and then feel hard done by that you get nothing in return. If you just try a bit harder to stick to those contracted hours, you won't feel so bad. People might also respect you more for not allowing yourself to be treated like a bitch.
