I agree. Many textbooks are used because of ties to the faculty of the deptartment. For instance, if a professor at a given university writes a textbook, and has a lot of say in what goes on in the deptartment, you can be sure that soon enough most other professors in the deptartment will be using their book. It's just the way university politics go.
Unfortunately, that will be just as harmful to my laptop and obviously not even close to as awesome as a raging fireball engulfing my car and causing chains of massive explosions.
My laptop gets left countless places unattended, many of them could get quite quite hot if the air conditioning quits. So what can you use as a safety? (Other than removing the battery).
It continues to irk me more and more each day when I hear people exclaim "this computer is so stupid." No, it's really quite incapable of thought, the programming is what could be doing 'stupid things'.
Plugging appliances in in my room isn't a big problem. My roomate and I have 10 power plugs, only need one phone, and have two ethernet plugs (which is enough when you hook up a wireless 802.11g hub in (which everyone in the dorm in turn thanks you for doing). My dorm has also never had problems with using too much power at once. As luck would have it however, I have had a blackout when burning a CD - as the wind does pick up pretty well at flat Oberlin, Ohio. I do assure you however, the (now) coaster is serving me well keeping me from paying fines for stained furniture.

Heh, well - unattended and locked up. But point taken, tempatures don't rise enough in normal situations.

Just in time for our discussion... CNN releases this article on increasing power needs of students in college. Good quick read related to this thread.
