  1. RIAAnnoying on Cell Phone Ringtones Give Music Industry Another Headache · · Score: 1

I actually RTFA and found this software isn't much different than using a basic freeware wave editor to crop an audio clip down to 30 seconds or so and then converting the resulting output with whatever compression format your cell phone uses for digital audio. I've done this with my Sprint phone using Qualcomm's free converter and it basically sounds absolutely horrible for anything except voice/a capella clips.

I was really hoping for something that uses intelligent waveform analysis to help you render a decent sounding MIDI file from the original digital audio. MIDI ringtones are really the only way to end up with something that remotely resembles the original song.

As for the RIAA's objections, they've been polluting P2P networks with MP3s that contain 30 second clips of the chorus/hook looped over and over for the entire original duration of the song. They're worthless enough to distribute on P2P, but they're lost revenue as ringtones. I get the feeling the RIAA is in the business of hypocrisy and music is just a side thing.

  2. It lacks bass and plasma on Project Plex-Box · · Score: 1

It's too bad I don't have a high enough credit limit to buy all this stuff, because I could easily 1-up this guy. Behold, the X-orbitant!

    LG Electronics 40" Plasma TV
Two 12" Kicker Comp VR subwoofers
    Eight super-bright CCFT lamps
    Sony 760watt Xplod Car Amplifier
Xbox internals ...all enclosed in a sleek, transparent acrylic case!

So what if it would take two people to move it, it would be the double plus ultimate Xbox mod!

  3. Re:Mass-produced replacement cases on Project Plex-Box · · Score: 1

I'm really surprised that more manufacturers haven't jumped on selling replacement transparent and/or coloured cases made to otherwise look like the originals for the most recent wave of consoles.

I'm sure it's probably a liability issue. If you made a box that the Xbox innards fit in, it might piss off Microsoft's team of ravenous lawyers.

Even if Microsoft doesn't give a shit, say a kid buys the new case, opens up his new Xbox (voiding the warrenty in the process) and then his parents decide to sue because the kid ends up elecrocuting himself on a charged capacitor while moving the innards from one box to the other. I wouldn't be surprised given how sue-happy people are these days.

Even though this plexiglass fish tank-looking mod is lame, I still think there's a certain appeal to creating your own modded case instead of buying some mass produced prefab case that every other mod-boy who bought the same thing has, so you're only as unique as the next person who bought the same case.

  4. Sortof a rip off... on Project Plex-Box · · Score: 1

Well, for one thing, it doesn't have the highly sought-after Samsung DVD drive. So figure, the Xbox guts are probably worth less than $120 since you can get a refurb Xbox for about that price on eBay. The auction claims he spent about $25 on plexiglass...

Now when you consider the cost of the neons, the switches, the crap he used to put it together with and all the other misc. odds and ends you need when doing a mod like this, he probably didn't make MUCH of a profit. If you have a decent paying job, you probably make more per hour than he made doing this mod... :)

And from the queer perspective, his friend standing next to the Plex-box is kinda cute (and probably jailbait)... Too bad the bidding wasn't for him. ;)

  5. Desktop replacement is a misnomer on 64-bit Laptops Reviewed · · Score: 3, Funny

The advantage of a desktop computer is the ability to open it up and futz with the innards. Want to call your laptop a desktop replacement? Give it an AGP slot so I can upgrade the video card.

So what if it'll be bulky and power hungry as hell? I want that high speed 3D rendering goodness to last and last.

At the very least, a desktop replacement laptop needs to synthesize the roar of 8 miniature fans turning. Without that sound, it just seems like an aspect of desktop-ness is missing.

  6. Re:Do what my gay friend does... on How Do You Organize Your Gear? · · Score: 1

How about just keeping it all over the place? If someone complains, just reply "my mess - my business". Keeping things organized is overrated. Of course, once they start putting RFID tags on everything, you could have a Google for your room!

  7. Spam is dying on Spammer DDoS-By-Virus On spamhaus.org · · Score: 5, Insightful

Seriously, I've been getting less spam lately thanks to filters. Sure, it's not gone entirely, but it's a lot less of a hassle than it used to be. I sure hope this is a sign of things to come... If they're this desperate to stop anti-spammers, they gotta be in their throws of death.
