This FP was supposed to be a "second post", not a first post, to make a point. I waited a bit before hitting submit, but... which just goes to show that "getting a FP" doesn't require some sort of conspiracy.
last time I did i had a FOSSie follow me around for half a year
I've had a few of those - in the end, they just discredit themselves, same as every time APK or Michael Kristopeit or whoever sees an anonymous comment someone posted against them and thinks it's me they go all nuts for a day, a week or even a month. My reaction? I couldn't care less. Or, I could care less, but I'd really have to work at it. They're just amateurs when it comes to "l'art de la trollerie". More of a threat to themselves than to anyone else.
either everyone ignores the nigger faggot trolls or the system does something about them
Most of the people already ignore the posters attacking blacks and LGBTtQq, and the recent spate of "these accounts are paid shills controlled by blah-blah-blah", while they were different enough to be amusing at first, are getting boring (esp. since at least one of the accounts listed is pretty obviously not a paid shill to anyone who's been around for a while, so really, who cares...:-)
Ultimately, they just discredit themselves, same as RMS did with the larger public when he made his asinine "Dead Steve Jobs" remarks. Maybe he was suffering from "footcheese-in-mouth" disease... Same as for Oracle, Ellison has pretty much discredited himself with his failed acquisition of Sun, because it really IS a fail.
Ultimately, this will prove to be a "Steve Ballmer Moment" for both Oracle and Ellison. Just another stupid decision that quickly gets forgotten as long as the profits keep rolling in.
I saw one of those commercials - basically the message I got from it was "only socially inept geeks would buy one of these to try to impress the opposite sex with how 'socially connected' they are."
Where humans interact most with algorithms is the internet,
Very doubtful. Standing, walking, interacting with other people, eating, looking outside and figuring out what to wear - these all involve processing information and decision-making. The internet is a much narrower set of interactions, with a much smaller list of possible outcomes.
pretty much any c program can be written in under 9 lines of code. Of course, some of those lines will be very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very long...
It's a TLD that's going to be operated by a private for-profit business. They won't be able to do much in the way of an invasive "vetting process", and $$$ talks. Even the Hells Angels knows how to use "pret-noms" (people who lend their names and identities as covers for activities) and "social engineering" (crack, broken bones) to get around it.
That's one thing I *hate* about programs that use custom toolkits to supply the same look-and-feel across all platforms. They should, to the extent possible, use the native toolkits for widgets, etc.
The problem (one of several) with web apps is that there's yet another layer between the application and the host platform, so one more layer to suck up cpu, one more layer to impose its' own problems and bugs, one more layer to fail, have exploits, or need to be accounted for every time it's updated.
Web-based programs suck. Look at the difference between a native IM program and a web-based chat program in terms of performance. Same with word processors, office suites, games...
If RIM thinks that HTML5 applications are going to save their a**, they should talk to HP (WebOS - dead), Nokia (WinPhone7, mostly dead) and then look at what Apple and Android are doing.
... because otherwise, Vesta would have sucked up all the material there, including a lot that went into Jupiter, and become the equivalent of Jupiter, but closer.
That would have turned Mars into an asteroid belt... and Earth into an undersized Mars.
And since Venus is just too darn close to the sun to support life... another lifeless solar system.
All this is going to do is encourage a false sense of security - after all, the chain of security is only as strong as the weakest link, and there are plenty of weak links, starting with the end users and their computers.
"But how was I to know that drivebydownload.secure serves up malware? Or that russianbusinessnetwork.secure would resell my credit card info?"
Actually the real purpose of the facemask is to avoid spreading your germs on others. It's usefulness at protecting the wearer from others is questionable at be
I'd say it depends... if it lets you get away with shoving someone who insists on continuing to hack all over you instead of covering their mouth and nose, I'd say it serves its purpose.
Also, people wearing facemasks are less likely to pick their noses while wearing them, so it helps slow down the #1 method of spreading germs - contaminated fingers. Consider it the booger equivalent of a dog muzzle.
The second time I watched it was in French on TVA (no sub-titles). Consider it "educational".
If everyone took a couple of hours a week to watch a rerun in a second language, they'd pick up an "ear" for it within a few years at most. It's a lot better technique than trying to learn a second language in school, which is counter-productive because it's freaking BORING!
If you want to get a point across, lobby peacefully for it through the proper channels.
And when proper channels don't work because the government in question (in the case of the student protests in Quebec) has lost all legitimacy through its' exposed ties to organized crime?
Montreal is also passing its own version (Mayor Tremblay is so underwhelming... "go back to school!" Yeah, right - why not fix the problems with the billions lost to corruption at city hall first?)
This whole thing may be unconstitutional under Section 2 of Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms - freedom of both expression and association are guaranteed for everyone.
Section 1 only allows for temporary suspension of the rights guaranteed in Section 2 - for example, if the FLQ goes back to putting bombs in mail-boxes.
So wear a hospital mask - they're still legal since their purpose is to help you avoid picking up air-borne diseases (after all, who knows what germs the other protesters are carrying around), not to disguise your appearance (which is just a secondary effect/benefit).
How are you supposed to assign a fair cash value to it?
One at least has to assign a value for services that doesn't break existing minimum wage laws.
You would think so, but it's not the case. There is nothing that prevents an independent contractor (the barterer) from offering a service below minimum wage, or even free.
Just go on kijiji or any of those rent-a-coder sites and look at how many people are quite willing to work for well under the minimum wage to "build their portfolio."
Whether it's an oil change on your car, or adding a second hard drive on a computer, you have the right do to so (you are "authorized") by statute - you don't need to beg the manufacturer for "authorization."
Of course, if you forget to put the drain plug back in, or shove ram into a socket it doesn't physically fit in, the damage is on you.

You need to step away from the keyboard - that "serial killer" in an MMORGP isn't real, and there are no consequences.
My brain is already optimized for ignoring Nicholas Carr. The first couple of sentences were enough to determine the rest is not worth reading.
So, with IPv6, will you be changing it to a 128-bit double.double (aka a "tim horton's").
Very doubtful. Standing, walking, interacting with other people, eating, looking outside and figuring out what to wear - these all involve processing information and decision-making. The internet is a much narrower set of interactions, with a much smaller list of possible outcomes.
I'll go one further - I've never seen anyone with a WP7 phone :-)
Or even just getting lucky and getting a first post - I've gotten 2 in the last 2 days without even trying ... just luck.

here you go - HTML 5 web apps for WinPhone7
It's a TLD that's going to be operated by a private for-profit business. They won't be able to do much in the way of an invasive "vetting process", and $$$ talks. Even the Hells Angels knows how to use "pret-noms" (people who lend their names and identities as covers for activities) and "social engineering" (crack, broken bones) to get around it.

It's for a chicken co-op, but it sure sounds and reads more like a chicken coop (hen house)
I'm surprised no conspiracy groups ever registered dis.info or noneofyour.biz
And in a case of the internet imitating life, steve.jobs is offline.
That would have turned Mars into an asteroid belt ... and Earth into an undersized Mars.
And since Venus is just too darn close to the sun to support life ... another lifeless solar system.
So they'll implement a new protocol: httpSS - twice as secure ... and you'll use it and like it, OR ELSE!
Of course it's a money grab. So quick - register in.secure and cash in!
All this is going to do is encourage a false sense of security - after all, the chain of security is only as strong as the weakest link, and there are plenty of weak links, starting with the end users and their computers.

Look what happens to people who pick their nose while driving and the airbag goes off ...
... when it's hacked.

After all, how credible is Quebec's Education Minister when she has to publicly admit that this story about how she takes campaign contributions from the mafia is true? And that the RCMP wanted to protect mobsters from a government inquiry that the Quebec government first refused to hold, then tried to water down? Quebec is the most corrupt place in North America.
Montreal is also passing its own version (Mayor Tremblay is so underwhelming ... "go back to school!" Yeah, right - why not fix the problems with the billions lost to corruption at city hall first?)

Or do like KISS - lots of makeup.

Sure you are. As the owner, you have the right to service your own laptop, same as you have the right to service your own car, etc. You can even use 3rd-party parts without losing warranty coverage.
Whether it's an oil change on your car, or adding a second hard drive on a computer, you have the right do to so (you are "authorized") by statute - you don't need to beg the manufacturer for "authorization."

HTML 5 "apps" won't save them any more than it helped Nokia with their WinPhone7 sales.
The real question in most people's minds is which one is going to go bust / get bought out first.
