I've always found the lack of Java very annoying too. To be fair, I think it's more like Sun/Java lacking support for FreeBSD rather than the other way around?
Anyway, it is possible to get past this, though it involves downloading the source from Sun, enabling Linux compatability, getting a Linux JDK installed then compiling your own FreeBSD JDK... no fun, but can be done and I found it worth the hassle.
