  1. Re:Why move privacy-sensitive data offsite anyway? on What's Going On in Canada? · · Score: 1

Because government agencies tend to be over beurocratic. An IT project which would cost £100,000 and take 6 months to implement and troubleshoot in a private company, will cost £500,000 and take 2 years in a government agency.

If an outsourcer charges the government £200,000 the taxpayers are still saving £300,000 over what it would have cost them otherwise.

Trouble is, the outsorcing company then finds that they can save x% by moving to wherever. This would be because they can make use of economies of scale and tie in with another project, or use cheaper labour, or get tax breaks etc..

  2. Good going to Canada on What's Going On in Canada? · · Score: 5, Insightful

As a UK citizen, the US government has decided that it has a right to collect any information about me that it chooses, from any agency in the UK (because we are Americas lap dog and would never dream of saying no), and then use that info as it sees fit. My data is not protected in any way because I am not a US citizen.

Nice to see that Canada has the balls to stand up the the USA.

  3. A few thoughts on Building Rackmount Cabinet for Home Use? · · Score: 5, Informative

Our old office used a cupboard for rackmount hubs.

If you are not going to be taking anything out of the "cabinet" too often, you could probably get away with this, and just put 2 bits of wood 19" apart so you can screw your kit directly into these...

If you do want to take things out (as I would) it would be nice to find some metal sheets with the appropriate holes drilled - they must exist - dunno where you could buy them though...

Remember rear access (no pun) but I spend as much time behind my cabinet rewiring this and that as I do in front.

For some reason rack mount gear other than networking kit is usually about twice the price of its non rack mount equivalent - take switch boxes (KVM?) and UPS's in particular - even server rack mount kits tend to be a few hundred quid - and all you get is a few brackets and perhaps some rails...

Hence I tend to go eith shelves in my cabinets - the advantages of rack mount, but cheaper!

  4. Re:Nokia 3650 on Best Bluetooth Capable Cell Phone? · · Score: 1

    I also have a 3650.

I echo most of the above comments but would add a few things.

    - Forget MIDI ringtones, you can use a wav file!!! This is really cool!
    - Bluetooth does massacre battery life 4 days down to 2 days!
    - Nokia have a strange method of doing bluetooth. If you try to connect to the serial port from a PC the phone accepts the connection, then drops it, then initiates a new connection back to the PC. Odd - took a bit of searching before I worked out how to connect it.
    - The address book /pim is far more comprehensive than any mobile I have encountered before or since. Outlook sync works great (ish). I don't know if there is a mac equivalent though... Would be pretty time consuming to type in all of those details manually...

  5. Re:Why the LoC? on E-Book Museum at Library of Congress? · · Score: 1

As a Brit, the LOC git kinda got my juices flowing with the "Why should that be an american role?" attitude.

On reflection - It is down to the UK and other European countries to archive the content, often generated in the US, which is banned by the US, and down to the US to archive content which is banned (or at least restricted) in Europe.

I would suggest that several different international repositories are required. When at some point we wind up as a united Earth, we can then emalgamate the lot. (At which point the new Earth government will no doubt enter into some form of censorship of it's own :( )
