What if, behind closed doors at Google they're working on a drug? A drug that's based on opiates, yet with the ease-of-use similar to marijuana. And in crack pipes it will be able to smoke just like a rock. And then they make the whole thing all open source.

I mean, come on. They have all that talent working there now and quite frankly, they've only come out with "neato" little things here and there. Yes, great search engine. But take all that talent and make something really cool! Something revolutionary!

There is absolutely no way Apple loses money selling 4 or 5 cds for $9.95. It costs them about 12 cents, maybe almost 3 dollars after the packaging and shipping is factored in.

    Moron.

But it all boils down to this: We put Tiger on a DVD instead of four CDs because we wanted to. That's all there is to it.

  6. Re:Backing Away? on Apple Backing Away From FireWire · · Score: 1
Apple is trying to save money and drop prices at the same time. Sure it sucks for us FireWire users. I have several FireWire peripherals and will probably spend the extra $20 getting the FireWire cable when I get my next iPod (hopefully soon). But it's a luxury, because I have USB 2.0 anyway.

Why not just use the cable from your old ipod?

  7. Re:Wow - that was fast! on LokiTorrent Shut Down · · Score: 1
Frankly, I think that none of us here could honestly say that people downloading torrents are likely to not download the work the torrents refer to. Hell, I don't think we could even say so with a straight face. So this doesn't bode well for people in the BT scene.

I have to disagree. Sometimes you might download a torrent and if your connection is so slow and you see the thing saying it will take 94 days to complete, you will just say fuck it and delete it. Willing to bet it happens more than 51% of the time to lots of people.

So merely providing a torrent tracker and such can be sufficient to be found liable for the direct infringement of other people. This is basically how they killed Napster -- it was helping the users, who were the direct infringers.

By your logic, then the ISP is guilty of contribution to copyright infringement. I think obviously Loki cut a deal because they didn't want to fight in court. If they had gone to court they would have won.

  9. Re:YUV DVI vs RGB DVI on DIY Mac mini Overclocking · · Score: 1
In my experience, this is often not the case. Even though high end telivisions have DVI jacks on them, they are using the YUV colourspace and not the RGB used for computer displays. I was annoyed to find this out, to say the least. Jacks are the same, but no-go. So the best video output you can do with the Mac mini is using the S-video dongle, which is not bad.

Are you retarded? I think you just used the wrong DVI cable. I am using a mac mini connected by DVI to a 27" Syntax Olevia HD TV and the picture is far superior to S-video or VGA. Granted, I had to install SwitchRes to get the resolution to 1400x788, but two seconds on google solved that problem.

  11. Steve Jobs is not an idiot on Apple Makes no Profit from iTunes · · Score: 1

OK, so the current model of the iTunes Music Store makes no profit, and Steve claims its a method to drive iPod sales. But, you have to also keep in mind he is a secretive, paranoid billionaire, who guards Apple's product developments like they were the secrets of the universe or something. Once ITMS is an established retailer of music selling hundreds of millions of songs a year, feasibly he could start signing artists independantly when their contracts with current labels are satisified with something like iTunes Producer, thus cutting out the middle man and probably giving the artists themselves a much larger cut, as well as promoting independant music. And don't think Steve isn't also laying the groundwork for some kind of iTunes/iMovie Video Store. Wait until bandwidth is a little cheaper, and every Mac has a DVD burner on it, and see how fast you can download and burn yourself a copy of Ghostbusters for 5 bucks. Granted, certain format/security issues would need to be tackled to spawn some kind of copy protection similar to what they have with the AAC format, but I'm sure there's a white room in Cupertino where they're working on just that.
