How true. I originally didn't intend for my case mod comment to be moderated as funny -- I think people saw the "cheese grater" comment that I linked to and somehow connected the two comments in a humorous way. I think Slashdot is a unique forum in that most people (including moderators) are practicing their speed reading skills more than actually reading the content.:^)
I was thinking that with the cheese grater-like front and back of the G5 tower, you could put any sort of neon lighting inside and it would look pretty neat... Couple that with an oil-based fog generator, and you would see lots of beams of light coming out of the case! I'm not sure if the fog would affect the system components though.
According to Greg Joswiak, Hardware VP at Apple, "the G5 is not going in a PowerBook anytime soon." (the article mentioning this is here)... Keep in mind though that Apple wants to keep selling their Powerbook G4s until the second that the Powerbook G5 comes out, so he is kind of obligated to say something like this.
As much as the current Powerbook G4s are sexy (I own the 550 MHz model), I would also recommend waiting a little while to see if there are any more developments about the Powerbook G5. Keep checking thinksecret.com, macrumors.com, macosrumors.com, spymac.com and such to find out!
Regardless of which Powerbook you opt for, you won't be disappointed -- they really are great machines. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at i_love_junk_email@yahoo.com (yes, it's a real address!)...
Every time I hear the name "Joswiak", I keep thinking the guy is some hybrid between Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak -- some kind of mutant creature straight out of the R&D Labs at Apple.:^)
I have read the perlre pod file and Mastering Regular Expressions for sections pertaining to multi-line regular expressions -- and none of the approaches given work for the files I work with. Programming Perl doesn't touch the topic. While the logical answer would be to switch files, sadly that is not an option for me.
Does anyone here know how to do multi-line regexes in perl? I've seen the notation on how to do it (Mastering Regular Expressions has one paragraph for it), but nothing seems to work...
"Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering."
Seriously though, people are just plain irrational... I think we have a lot of "left-over" emotions from our hunter-gatherer days that haunt us now in the form of superiority complexes, hate, wars and the like. Sadly, removing the basis of those emotions would remove the very thing that makes us human -- the capacity to "feel".
Is it just me, or does the new G5 look like a massive cheese grater from the front?
The new Apple Powercheesegrater 9000 guarantees to grate cheese 9.7x faster than any Intel lookalike. Gastronomically impress your friends with freshly grated parmesan, romano or limburger cheese by simply moving a cheese block along the front (or back!) of the Powercheesegrater case. The groundbreaking 64-bit G5 CPU gently heats your cheese while you continue to grate. This computer simply gives the greatest grate imaginable -- all from the folks who brought you the original Macintosh computer. Call 1-800-MY-APPLE today for more information, or to place an order.
The SPEC benchmark programs that Apple ran were all compiled by GCC 3.3 -- the benchmarks on the SPEC website are different because they use different compilers. Chill out.:^)
I am willing to bet that Apple's 64-bit computer (assuming it is released) will be over a thousand dollars cheaper than the HP workstation you mentioned, and still score competitively against it...

Greg, in case you read my comment, all apologies -- I would still like to have a chance of working at Apple. :^)
Here is the image that I think Taco should use to replace the G4 with...

The Church of Yoda has a passage on this:

Either I'm surfing /. at too high of a threshold, or the anti-Apple trolls seem to have run away in fear today... :^)
I agree -- it locked up hard and fast... I still find it funny that they host a copy online though. :^)
They are al$o going to be very fa$t... :^)
Well, Apple just announced their Powermac G5:
- Dual 2.0 GHz PPC970 processors
- 160 GB of hard drive space
- 4x DVD-R Superdrive
$2,999
vs. the HP system you mentioned, when configured as close to equivalently as possible:
- Dual 900 MHz Itanium processors
- 145 GB of hard drive space
- CD-RW / DVD-ROM combo drive
$10,043
$7,000 cheaper... The only question now is how their performance compares. Time will tell!
Steve Jobs just confirmed at the WWDC Keynote that Apple systems with the PPC970 are a reality! No word yet on availability.

Here's to hoping that Apple truly does announce a 64-bit workstation today -- that will nicely put Microsoft's announcements in perspective. :^)
/me dons asbestos suit...
A friend of mine thought of something similar once -- what if you had two email addresses that had forwarding rules set to each other? In other words:
joe@abc.com auto-forwards all incoming email to joe@xyz.com
joe@xyz.com auto-forwards all incoming email to joe@abc.com
It's the classic "10 GOTO 20; 20 GOTO 10", but with email accounts. Has anyone out there tried this?
