If you can build a machine on practically a single PCB, that small, with DVD-reading and CD-RW capabilities, and sell it for under $500...

If you want the same specs as a Mac mini for less, go look on eBay or a second-hand reseller (try 2ndchancepc.co.uk). The point of the Mac mini isn't to have top-of-the-line components - it's to be a usable, cheap box for your Mum or Dad to just pick up and plug in.

What worries me the most about the "Parent File Scan" is that is makes no attempt to determine whether a file has been downloaded, ripped, or even included with other software. Case in point - when running the scan as a test on my machine, it picked up every sound file from Civilization III. What are non-technical users (parents in particular) going to think when they see hundreds of files picked up, with the strong implication that they are illigal?

The Saturn was actually tremendously successful - in Japan. Whilst outside the land of the rising sun it was overwhelmed by the PlayStation, in Japan it actually sold more than the Mega Drive (Genesis) had done.

The Dreamcast also did well, until the arrival of the PS2 - remember the hype Sony put out over that? Still, people bought into it at Sega's cost.

  12. Re:sounds like a patch to me on Sims 2 Hacks Spread Like Viruses · · Score: 1

None of these effects are considered 'normal' in The Sims - a coffee machine fills one stat (Energy), but rapidly drains another (Toilet), the result being a Sim gets a momentary boost but needs to go to the toilet sooner. This is intentional and is a (simplified) model of real life. However, the modified expresso machine fills all meters and lowers none - it's the coffee you've always dreamed of. Not at all realistic, and certainly not something EA/Maxis would have introduced.

Ditto with the 'open relationships' and the social worker. Sims, like us, get kind of jealous if they see their significant other getting intimate with another Sim, and Social Workers will gladly take away a child they feel is neglected. These 'hacks' remove these effects.

I remember when my father first brought home a computer from work - a state-of-the-art (for its time) Acorn Archimedes. I cut my teeth on that machine - it had a friendly UI, powerful command line, BASIC built-in, and would be perfect for a youngster today to play around on.

They're dirt cheap on eBay these days - an A3020 would set you back only about £30. It has the OS and a load of applications in ROM, so there's no risk of accidentally 'breaking' the computer, there's plenty of information available online to help you out, it's not susceptible to any viruses currently circulating, has the best version of Lemmings... ah, those were the days.

I seriously doubt that. While it is true that Apple are pouring more resources into non-Mac ventures than before (iPod sure as hell gets more attention from within Apple than the Newton ever did), the Mac itself is Steve Job's baby. He'd never kill it off unless it were for the Next Big Computing Thing, and the iPod simply isn't it.

The Mac brings in money, simple as that. The iPod may be doing well today, but if Sony or Dell or iRiver were to launch a player that captivated the market like Apple has done, there goes the iPod's revenue stream. But the Mac's still ticking away, despite a small market share.
