Of course not, but if you're watching your own copy, you're not watching their ads (TiVO not withstanding). NBC gets their money from ads, not the show.
FTL: The plane's high-octane fuel exploded, hurtling flames down the side of the building and inside through hallways and stairwells all the way down to the 75th floor.
Heh, This time it worked. Usually I get so much junk when I don't use the quotes, they just became habit. Goes to show, it takes a real human to sort it out. You have proven that Slashdot makes a better search engine than Google. TNX
Unless you are looking for something who's name is part of a product or ad, you will get very few results. That link is a fairly common phrase I would think, and yet look how little info I get on it. And none of them showed the command I can't remember. If you need a product, go to Google. If you need information, ???
Yes, a lot of us geeks use that stuff (I don't, as I just ignore them)...
I do too, until an unresponsive ad page prevents the main page from loading, as what happens here. Because of that, I broke down and installed the ad blocker. If they want me to see their ads, they have stop attempting to steal my time. It's the only nonrenewable resource there is.
Just put AOL on a separate subnet. Then the rest of the net can reassume the civility of the old Compuserve days. Another big plus would allow people to be their own servers, instead of everybody depending on the big commercial ones. You know, distributed load, P2P, there's a novel concept. And of course those who wish to remain anonymous need community support, seeing as that you'll probably never get that from the commercial, much less the government sector. Maybe now is the time to really develope the wireless "cloud", again to relieve us of telecom/cable dependence. But like the article says, there will probably be too much meddling from special interests for any really good system to result. Just more TV is what the big money will bring us.
I guess I kinda remember them as a computer company. Now they sell gadgets, gimmicks, toys, most of which won't work without some kind of Hollywood tie-in. They might as well do like IBM and sell off their PC line up, which might flounder, otherwise, in the face of their new priorities.
It looks like Apple is moving away from the operating system business and towards Hollywood's fat pipe into our homes. I hope they find a good buyer. Or better yet they open source it.
And you would be correct in that assumption. Don't sweat it. Chances are if you try to defend yourself, you will end up quite dead. Murder is legal when it's done by the "right" people.
In base animals this behavior is regulated such that the lead animals never overexploit their fellow pack members.
That is because they are rigidly controlled by their environment. That is no longer true for us. We can produce and transport anything anywhere anytime. That throws a very big wrench in the balance of power and does pervert things a bit. And you pointed out the only real difference between man and beast(I always liked that phrase) that I can think of. Maybe our methods aren't always as similar as the motivations behind them. The billion year old fear of "there's never enough" weighs very heavily.
An alpha animal cannot subject his fellow animals to slavery.
Slavery is a very human conception. If you follow the behavior of the pack, everybody does follow the alpha male's lead, except for the not so occasional challenger. He is the first to eat. He might be the only to get laid. That would really stink in a human society.
This guilt trip works wonders...
You bet it does. But here again, they are exploiting our weakness. We just need to wise up to these age old tricks. It's our defeatism that keeps us where we are today.Defeating them is easy. Convincing your neighbors that not only is it possible, but also very likely that they can win is quite another story, and that's where the real work is. The moment they turn their backs on them, it'll be a walk in the park. So I won't concern myself with who's at the top doing whatnot. My aim is to limit their power and influence. I feel it's more important to focus on the basics of accomplishing that than all the little details of who did what how. It is a given that anybody you put up on that pedestal will act precisely the same way.
What I'm trying to point out, and maybe rather poorly, is that all the things you describe are the result of something else. While most are only looking at the human aspect of it, I'm trying to say it goes much deeper and way beyond than any puny human reasoning which completely fails the test of motivation.
Of course I'm opposed to such nonsense. I don't need to be told or ordered to show respect. And I won't be, period! My only obligation is to leave you alone, and yours is the same to me. Your social contract is just a bunch of hogwash to justify misdeeds by the authorities. Any society that demands my allegiance can take a flying leap. Goodbye, yourself.
This doesn't lead to the possibility that a group of users could mark a legitimate sender as a spammer? I think this an old question, but I don't remember the answer. And if it is possible, how do you defend against it?
Of course not, but if you're watching your own copy, you're not watching their ads (TiVO not withstanding). NBC gets their money from ads, not the show.
The value of a product is directly related to its scarcity.
...because there was no fire.

I ain't pullin' no more cable! Read my lips! No new hardware!
Question the status quo, people.
Okay. Where's your your next stop?
outstandingly supple, but not too many people are getting very excited about it.
Without OS X, what use would a Mac be?
You can put your weed in there.
It's not really happening?

Wings? Those tiny, bony, little things? Give me a drumstick. Meat is for the man. The bone is for the dog.

Better than humans. I'm voting cannabis, but I don't know if I should go with the sativa or the indica platform. Both look very tasty.
Too much coffee will do that to you
