It's impossible to provide labor jobs that provide a middle-class living wage for everyone. Providing a living-wage for everyone has proven ridiculous; people have room mates for a reason, and back in the day we employed children to provide for families. Family business, and even families sending their 10 and 12 year olds to work in the fields for pay to support the family. Now all that is illegal.
Someone brought up that minimum wage today would be $22.50/hr or thereabouts if it had kept up with what it was when we started. I pointed out that the cost of crew has moved McDonalds to cut staffing by almost 50% (there were way more people behind the counter in a McDonalds in the 90s--my mom has been a crew manager in several restaurants, having to track labor costs and make staffing decisions, and she's seen the decline first-hand and provided some valuable insight into how restaurants handle labor costs, for what that's worth), and that overall the cost of a McDonalds Value Meal would be around $25-$35 if they had to pay their crew $22/hr. Be mindful they pay them about $7/hr, and it costs $6-$8 for a Value Meal. Be mindful McDonalds has cut out a lot of the straight waste, throwing tons of food away and burning excess energy, in the past two decades.
Mexicans have to work, too. Why do they come here for jobs? Aren't there jobs in Mexico for all those little brown people? Have you considered that, maybe, if some parts of the world simply can't sustain themselves, maybe the idea that we could is just insane?
Bicycling to work is a much better experience than driving. I enjoyed the commute, it was fun and exhilarating, even challenging. For 10 minutes time invested a day (42 minute drive, 45 minute bike ride) I got a lot of exercise. I was awake when I got to work. I wasn't tired throughout the day. I slept better. I felt more intelligent--I WAS more intelligent, due to physical activity inducing a heightened production of BNF and BDNF, thus allowing my brain to more readily create and differentiate neurons in the process of analytical learning. I saw people... in this run-down slum city, I saw people, people I was told were all drug addicts and murderers, living out their lives, trying to get by. Poor people, broken by poverty, smiling and waving and talking with each other happily. I saw life, I saw the only glimpse into the good side of humanity I've ever seen.
So country-boy you can have your 25 mile drive to work through your urban sprawl and talk about how good the fresh country air and wide open spaces are while you're locked away in your cramped steel-box livingroom-on-wheels. I'll stick to enjoying life, the wide-open spaces of the city, the friendly people, and fresh air.
New Orleans was hit by a Category 4 tropical storm. Dutchland, on the other hand, is below sea level in some places and has held back the fucking ocean by dykes made of packed mud for hundreds of years.
The great mistake of society is a desire to eliminate the poor.
Destruction is not profit. When we destroy things, we lose the wealth they represent.
When I am finished with my clothes, I get new clothes. The old clothes go through the Singer sewing machine and the steam press, and then with their tasteful patchwork and a fresh press-and-starch they go to Good Will or Planet Aid or something (I really need to audit these people for efficiency). Some poor negro kid in my city (it's full of poverty-stricken blacks, and Good Will donations go exactly to the store you put them in) now gets a $70 pair of pants for $5. Now he has nice pants, a few repairs, but they're nice. He doesn't have to buy pants, and that wealth stays in society. Also he's poor, so he can't afford that shit anyway; his mom's too busy trying to figure out how to afford food. Well now she can.
Now imagine that these poor kids were all on my level or better. Enough money to just flip over their clothes, their kitchen supplies (dinged, scratched pots and pans; incomplete dinnerware sets; etc.). Nobody has mis-matched plates and cups. Nobody has old clothes. All that shit goes right in the trash--and with it, the wealth it represents in society. The products of labor are squandered, and society becomes poor for it.
We need poor people. We need them so we have a place to send our shit so that society can benefit from the products of labor, so that society can remain stable and efficient and advance. There is not an infinite source of wealth out there; if we ever got rid of the poor, we'd be revved like on caffeine, and the adenosine crash is soon to follow.
This is also why I fully support fining people for excessive trash. My taxes pay for landfilling your junk. If you put out 50 bags of trash, you are costing me money, so we'll fine you and make you pay for that extra load instead of everyone else. On top of that, people generate 50 bags of trash when they clean out their homes--when they find piles of old clothes and serviceable-but-disused kitchenware and such and throw it in the trash. You could have passed that on to a donation center at no cost to you--in fact Good Will will give you a receipt, you write the numbers on your taxes and file it and you get a discount on your taxes. Poor kids would have had things to cook food in, and they wouldn't have to choose between having food to eat or having a way to prepare said food so they could eat it. You made society less wealthy, society should extract that cost from your wealth and distribute it back into everyone else's pool of wealth.
"More to go around" doesn't keep happening when you start throwing all that stuff in the trash. Suddenly there's less actually around. You thought it would be there forever?
It's a natural process. I'm sitting on dozens of designs for advanced, low-power major appliances that replace conventional appliances with between 1/3 and 1/10 of the power requirements of the modern ones. Just waiting on someone to finish their quantum tunneling junction--it works, but yield is shitty. Effectively they produce one where 1% of the surface functions and the rest is mis-manufactured and fails. This is not marketable.
Imagine a clothes dryer that doesn't exhaust its air. It heats the inside and removes the water by dehumidification, with a closed circulation loop. Much less heating involved, much less energy than you'd expect (a trick in the design), etc.
Imagine a car that gets 1000+ mpg (based on 38kWh per 1gal gasoline).
Imagine an oven that doesn't heat your house when you run it.
These things are coming. The new tools are opening a huge range of possibilities.
Prisoner's dilemma. If we both cut back, it's cheaper for both of us. If none of us cut back, we pay more altogether and each pays twice as much as if we all went in together. If one of us cuts back and one of us doesn't, the one who cuts back gets off scott free and the other gets to pay the whole bill.
Problem with those wide-open country places is you have to have city-folk amenities to get around. Now me, I took to bicycling to work... man, now there was a great idea. Can't do that in rural Delaware or Pennsylvania.
All of this stupid shit is why I was wandering around yesterday conjecturing on methods to farm the open ocean. Crop fields dozens or hundreds of meters down, suspended by flinkers and buoys, growing seaweed. Because you can't easily control fertilization, you're going to rely on a healthy environment--and now commerce has a reason to lose its shit when people start destroying the oceans.
It's like when you talk about how we give TRIPLE SENTENCES if you can show psychological harm in a rape case--if you rape the shit out of some 14 year old girl and she just shrugs it off after it's all over, you don't go to jail nearly as long--and so prosecutors send victims (both real victims who were beaten and forced and legal victims who are presumed "unable to consent due to being too young to have a valid opinion on what they want to do") to psychologists who convince them that they've survived a horrible ordeal and will need years of therapy. People call you a "Rape Apologist" for pointing out that we damage people more by framing rape the way we do--effectively grooming people to be hurt more when it happens. They need some justification beyond "forcing people into sex against their will is bad," because apparently it would be okay if it didn't cause lasting harm.
Have you ever tried to have sex with a woman? Woman are stupid, panicky animals and most men can't for the life of them get their dick in it. Then there's the one or two guys that fuck 6 new girls a week and could get your orthodox muslim wife bent over a couch in 90 seconds flat just by talking sweet.
Every dude who's not boning the shit out of your girlfriend while you're at work and almost every single woman is probably the kind of idiot that would give a for-profit corporation donations.
Flash it with Cyanogenmod, tell Clockwork to wipe the cache/data partitions, and sell it off. Nobody's going to buy your phone and extract your child pornography.
You're thinking people are capitalists. They're socialists. America is a socialism-communism political atmosphere. It's like how we like fucking and see stuff about teachers giving 16 year olds blowjobs and go "DAMN I wish my teachers were like that in high school!", but we tell our post-pubescent young adults they need to stay virgins and should behave and not get naked or look at porn. It's dirty and naughty and wrong, and we tell everyone that... while demanding more public social services.
Pretty much you nailed it. These days, people are social democrats: they want more government services, more hand-outs, more take-everyone-else's-money-and-give-it-to-me. That's why American politics went hard into free healthcare and extended unemployment. People will bring up all kinds of things about the economy and what we "needed" to avert a supposed disaster; but the truth is all that is irrelevant, regardless of validity or lack thereof. Americans, and most of the world, are a socialist-communist people.
It's a marketing point to have a kickstarter. It gives you validity. You kickstarted your project, you put up a thing and asked for money with zero obligations. Not investors, not loans, not negotiated marketing deals. "Please give me free money." People associate this behavior with the little man looking to make an ambitious move in the market, to create something corporate overlords won't put money into the risk pot for. It gives them a warm, squishy feeling inside.
B12 is supposed to be microgram, B3 is impossible to overdose on but will cause pain. B1 you need to inject to get toxic levels of; it won't absorb intestinally.
You need purified B vitamins to get toxic levels of them in your system, because toxic levels are ridiculously high. Some of them you simply can't absorb without doing some serious shit.
In either case, the point was that supplements aren't necessary, but aren't necessarily toxic. Choline is a striking example--you need more than you're probably getting, and it WILL catch up to you eventually (most of the population is affected by this)--as is Vitamin A--actually possible to mistakenly kill yourself on it. The rest are just silly. Magnesium, calcium, and zinc are good to have--they're in food. Iodine is supplemented in everything (salt, milk, etc.), but... eat fish. I mean honestly.
You can pop a B complex every day and it's not going to hurt you. Neither is Centrum. You don't really need it, usually.
Choline being an important exception, since it's fucking hard to derive from food and you need quite a lot of it. You can survive effectively without it--evolution produces something that can breed more effectively, no other guarantees--but you're going to have severe end-of-life issues. Alzheimers, senility, etc. Things that just don't matter if the 47 year old woman is the highly respected village elder because she's... old... so very old, older than anyone ever imagined anyone could get. Also, stupid people breed like rats--including all the "black-on-black crime" sector folks, tribal pygmies and africans, and the like. (Why are there tribal suds and negros but no tribal white folk????)
B vitamins won't hurt you because they're impossible to absorb in toxic quantities. Vitamin A is a vicious poison--eating dog can cause toxicosis, particularly dog liver will kill you via vitamin A poisoning. People are quite Vitamin C tolerant. Supplementation of most of these is unnecessary (Vitamin C is in everything and you need very little Vitamin A), although B vitamins are critical if you're supplementing with SAM-e or other things.
Aside from choline and tweaks (L-Theanine for an anxiolytic to handle stress, antioxidants like EGCg from green tea extract, etc.), supplements are pretty useless. You should take them if you're on a maintenance drug that depletes a vitamin or if you have a medical condition, but otherwise you're probably fine. Trust me, you'll know if you have Scurvy.
Yes, let's send a manifest of the hundreds of little files I already have from you with every request, compressed so it's only about 8-12kb in size. That's much better than a 700 byte header.
They're actually tip-toeing into making sure that I pay more to cover people who are less healthy and at higher risk and higher cost.
It's like gay marriage. Now that DOMA is stricken, everyone is cheering about gay rights (okay everyone is pissed, but fuck them). I'm pissed, because now the gays who have XBox boyfriends who stay home all day playing first-person shooters instead of working will pay half as much in taxes. That means the government gets less take. That then means the government will have to raise taxes (eventually) (our government is too retarded to curb spending), which will raise taxes 50% as much on stay-at-home-gayboy and stay-at-home-lezchick and stay-at-home-your-woman-belongs-in-the-kitchen families as it will on singles and dual-income heterosexual unions (because women should not be making a profit, it is a crime against God, and they are not allowed in the Divine Treasury).
So now I have to pay more taxes to support gays. Some gays. Just like I have to pay taxes to support guys' wives who stay at home and tend house. She's your maid, not mine; you pay for her, leave me out of it. Same goes for your gayboy hubby and lesbian housewench. If you can't afford the life decisions you're making, you deserve to fail out just like the rest of the morons who do shit they can't afford--like buy expensive BMWs that get repossessed and $600,000 houses that get foreclosed on.
While I appreciate that people get old, healthy people who remain physically active and don't poison their bodies with excessive drugs and alcohol and cigarettes (I accept that you smoke a pipe at the end of the day for a few minutes, or drink a beer or two each day; it's your fault if you're hammering a 6 pack a day and chain smoking and pounding heroin) simply aren't that expensive. One day they just get sick, and then a week or a month later they're gone. This whole trend with staying sick and weak for decades at a time is a symptom of poor physical care. The people who are stricken down by bad genetics and cancer and disease... they have insurance, their insurance covers it, and their unfortunate luck is passed onto the rest of us as the insurance companies try to balance their risk, sure.. that's what insurance is. If you're just getting insurance when you're old and sickly, you deserve to pay more; why didn't you have insurance before? If you're old and HEALTHY, you shouldn't be paying excessively, you're not a huge expense risk.
No, I don't think I should be given a pass when I get old and I have trouble because I'm eating like shit and not active. This is why I bicycle around.
No, the header is not 1kb or 50kb or 200kb. It's tiny. Typical size is 700-800 bytes, though 2k and 4k headers are uncommon and 8k headers are rare. They happen in special cases. That's called "Networking". Your operating system selects the source port, and it must be above port 1023. This is the port that data comes back to. A connection is unique by src/dest/srcpt/dstpt, so if you want to connect to the same server on port 80 multiple times you need to use multiple source ports.
You obviously don't know shit about networking. I trust No Starch Press as much as O'Reilly (these are both very high quality publishers), but can't speak for that book in particular. I'll probably buy it (Yes it's pricey) because I don't know shit about IPv6 and my first 50 encounters have bewildered me. I get concepts, but I don't get the new protocol... can't live with that.
It's impossible to provide labor jobs that provide a middle-class living wage for everyone. No it doesn't. You can hold back the tide with a wall of dirt and sand a meter thick.

HTTP already does that with pipelining. One connection, many files, optional compression on the body. The header is tiny.
This binary protocol will be scrapped for JSON.
