    They "can't" because they have neither the will nor the ability to mandate that all their third-party developers use a particular language or toolchain. Of course, they are perfectly able to create a high-quality tool chain that is capable of this, for developers who want to use it:

    I gathered the OP was upset that updates to certain consumer devices are headline news on Slashdot, but a major release of a widely-used IDE is not. I agree with the OP, the discrepancy is not defensible.

    Yeah, I'm pretty sure you can write open source software with Visual Studio. Even some for Linux. I thought the lack of headline was pretty classless too.

    Did you even spend 1 second at that wikipedia link?

    Look at the pie graph of spending. Entitlement programs, i.e. welfare - that is, social security, medicare, and other mandatory spending - make up well over 50% of the total. Defense clocks in at around 25%. Given our current deficit, *completely eliminating* defense spending would not even *balance* the budget. Why? Because all the BIG spending is on entitlements.

    The vast majority of school spending is *already* on salary and benefits. In my local district, it's upwards of 80% of the entire operating budget. The average annual cost for a teacher's salary and benefits is over $100,000. Meanwhile, the schools are failing miserably.

    Actually the drivers for most video cards are automatically downloaded and installed by Windows Update for several years now.

    I concur, Security Essentials is pleasantly small to download, fast to install, easy on resources, and reasonably effective. Be aware though it does validate with Genuine Advantage.
