Like not like it at all...
All is built and installed from source.

apt-build takes the sources and produces a deb that is then installed.

Well, if you download apt-src packages, compile them, and then install the package on your machine for any install. Then it is barely similar...

A parallel then. Ports downloads application sources, compiles and installs.

The only difference is one produces a package file before installing, I wouldn't say that's 'barely' different.

The regular package management for BSDs, the ports collection, is not like .rpm or .deb at all. The closest Linux equivilent would be Gentoo, since it was based on Ports, and improved upon from there (improved in the opinion of the people doing the improving anyway.) Everything there is compiled from source based on some pretty beefy makefiles.

Not like .deb at all? So how is this not like apt-build again?

As long as the site isn't storing the passwords in a format that can be decrypted (or plain text!), and is adding sufficient salt, you should be able to avoid the rainbow tables and the common password generators (such as Jack the Ripper).

In my opinion, this is not good enough as most common hashes are designed themselves to be quickly generated for signature purposes (md5, sha512 etc), brute-forcing takes little time these days. The use of rainbow tables aren't as necessary with the calculation speed of current processor technologies.

A knowledgeable web developer in my opinion would use an algorithm designed to be slow such as bcrypt or a stretched algorithm such as PBKDF2, this is a far better defense against brute-forcing.

Also, outside of older security professionals, do malicious users even use jack the ripper anymore?

We should almost really have a 2ndary "secure" email that we don't use except for managing password changes etc.

I don't really feel confident in suggesting a product I don't own and know to a great extent to be honest. Also, in some posts, it's assumed that if you're not getting an xbox, you're probably going to use another console or PC.

homes with poor availability of Internet connections, or using a console away from home.

You would think this issue would have been resolved now for most places.

But what comparable product is for these audiences?

A comparable product for a different audience based off what you described... Off the top of my head, a Wii U maybe (Disclaimer: I don't own one or care to get one currently)? It's not always on, has a good chunk of popular titles (CoD, BF, ME and a bunch of exclusives that target minor children too like Mario, Rayman etc). and is officially child friendly too. I understand it also has some sync stuff with certain games that tie into their portable console (the 3DS) for syncing up stuff to play on the move too, but I do not remember what that was called.
