  1. The difference between Geeks and Nerds on Geeks vs. Nerds · · Score: 1

Some of my fellow students and I have decided that a Nerd is someone into computers ie. Programmers, Hackers. A Geek on the other hand is anyone who is social challenged in any way. Given this if you are a Nerd you can't be a Geek. The only reason for this definition is that the word Nerd seems to be a buzzword for ppl who are making it big in the computer world now. And afterall those of us who made this definition are CS majors :P Well I figured I would put in my two cents just because I didn't have anything better to do.

  2. My ideas on GA's on Review: An Introduction to Genetic Algorithms · · Score: 1

Hmmmm......... it may be a book I have to buy. But the one problem with GA's for me at least is the answers they come up with don't perform as well as the answers created by a skilled programmer. Recently I used a GA to program a robot to avoid obsticles, the problem was the controller I wrote myself out-performed the GA by a large margin. In fact in a 10 min. test the robot running the GA's code would hit the wall maybe 5 or 6 times, while it would only hit once at the most using my code. Basically after researching this for awhile I found that the GA's don't work with problems that have lots of bad data (outliers). This makes them useless for most practical applications. Don't get me wrong there still great for crunching numbers or other applications where the data set is really stable. Anyway I think that GA's are great however, I don't think they will ever be used in mainstream computing.

The opinion of a CS undergrad :P

  3. AOL is right, in this case on AOL Jilts Open Source · · Score: 1

I think that AOL is doing the right thing. However I also think there should be a universal messaging standard. To elimate most of the server problems associated with a universal standard either your going to have to make the ISP's run the servers or your going to have to have the clients run the servers. The problem with client ran servers is that some of us (ME!) are behind firewalls that won't allow the proper packets through. Now if you have the ISP's running the server your going to have to deal with the ISP's which will be tough. I mean no ISP is going to adopt a new service and start running it overnight, it will have to be tested and re-tested ......... But honestly there is a problem here, I was at a friends house and he was running 3 chat clients. That just isn't right.

Anyway sorry for the rant but I have a need to inform those who post bad info :)
