Sorry guys, but I believe SGI needs some mindshare, and that's why they are doing this. Irix scales much better, and so does Solaris and UnixWare. But, granted, they are not as "hot" these days.
It's a good thing for Linux and SGI, but not because Linux is such a good SMP OS.
OT: I have just read they are selling Playstation here in Helsinki for 700 FIM (~145 US$) Do you think it's a fair price?
I have read on www.benews.com that there is an effort to port apache to BeOS. As you know, BeOS is pervasively multithreaded, which means it will use multiple processors much better than even NT. Now, Apache 2.0 is a version of Apache utilizes this feature and, therefore, rund much faster. There is an alpha version of Apache 2.0. I guess once Linux kernel gets the pervasively multithreadedness, apache 2.0 will run on it, too. But I wonder how much of a re-engineerig effort this is for Linus?
BTW, there is a Apache 1.3.9 port for BeOS; but the 2.0 is the thing to go for, for BeOS.
see, they are easy to spell. Just remember Pentium.... which reminds me... when Intel decided for the name Pentium, did they have in mind the Hydrogene nucleus with 4 additional neutrons? And what happened to the Quartium;o)
Well, at least I believe there is no malice in this "project". I took the time to read the biographies of the people behind this project Mark Bean and Lloyd Pye. They seem to be people genuinely interested in this kind of stuff. I particuarly appreciated this page where Mr. Pye describes some discrepancies between micro-and-macroevolution. Very interesting reading.
Let me say that I don't really believe that humans are descending from aliens, but I do find some problems with Darwin's theory, too. And I do believe the universe has many other intelligent creatures (well, if we count ourself intelligent creatures).
he solution is to use tools that interoperate and enable you to manage multiple accounts, security, identity and authentication informations. Novell provides Single Sign On to login to accounts on different systems and applications through the network. Another solution-enabler, for the Internet, is Digitalme. It stores your online identity information and helps you manage your accounts (the e-card is a particularly pretty thingy IMHO). LDAP is another element of the puzzle, and Novell Directory Services knits them all together. And I almost forgot to mention; a year ago I tried some Java beans and VB ActiveX controls that connected to NDS, and I could, therefore, create NDS-aware applications. You could, for example, make a simple application that would tell you the number of servers and users in a certain organisational unit. OK, and I am pretty nostalgic because I'm working on totally different projects now, so I kinda miss the neat Novell technology....
I will say immediately, I only know about Mr. Vranesevich what I have read in this thread. And I don't take it all for gold. However, I am appaled by some posts, which seem to support gratuitous hatred, call the guy names and show a high level of guillability. The kind of guillability you would expect at a lynch.
To prove this point, I would like to point out to an effect of distortion of the sentences. Even though V. states "However, what Ken did far surpassed simple satire. By posting a photo of my younger sister (who was a minor at the time), along with her full name and address, he successfully started a mass campaign of harassment against her and my family." so he talks about a photo (therefore ONE), many posters who were negative to V. said "the pictures of his sister" which misleads the reader to think of some kind of porno pictures. Humiliating.
Also, the questions that I read in the interview, would have certainly hurt me. I'm not saying that all were unanswerable (some of them were), but I can imagine that the guy felt hated. I don't know how I would have reacted in his place, but am actually surprised by the decorum and behaviour he managed toshow. It was certainly above the average/. question he was supposed to answer.
I could see, in some posts here, a good example of the herd mentality. I have studied a bit about it (it was called "Psychology of the group") and I am reminded how individuals that are otherwise anonymous cowards, became very vocal and "brave" in their acts. The acts I am talking about are the insults hurled at a person that they dont't know, they don't know what is the truth (because none of us still knows the exact facts), they only know that here is a guy whom everybody seems to hate, so let's cal him names, let's call his sister names.
Conclusion? No conclusion, but it seems to me that anyone could be Mr. Vranesevic.

I believe the Tibetan economy, while not being the strongest, would not "die". That is pure bullshit. The opposite is true, the Chinese govt. is using the mineral and other resources of Tibet. Why on earth would the Chinese govt. move people from China to Tibet, if it's such a poor country?
I mean, the same people that have sent the tanks to reduce to minced meat the students on the Tyenan Men square, endorse Linux?
The same people that endorsed the nazi actions of the serbian army in kosovo, endorse Linux?
The same people that order hundreds (thousands?) of capital executions per year, endorse Linux? (did you know there are doctors waiting for the poor guy to be shot in his had, so that they can take the organs EVEN IF HE IS NOT YET DEAD?)
Is this supposed to be funny? So, Linux is really going to have world domination, I mean, China is the most populous country by far.
Don't missunderstand me, I am not willing to say anything negative about Linux and the community, quite the opposite, I think of the positive ideals that have lead to Linux. I prefere BeOS, but I know who was breaking the ice...
To all of you in US this may sound a dumb question. Nevermind, here I go: When you say "35K" do you mean net salary? Or pre-tax?
OK, so I may as well add my 0.02 about finland. A UNIX admin (seems the most popular job on/.) can get from 30 to 40K taxes excluded. But the tax is about 30 to 32 % for that salary range. C and Java developers fall in that range, too. You are a bit better off doing project management. Nokia DOESN'T excell with the salaries, but the benefits are great. I personally prefere working at Nokia than some minor company that would pay better. The environment is much more friendly, with people from all around the world (then, again, if you're a racistic ass, you might not like it), which I really enjoy. The best seems to be a contractor. They get 2 to 3 times higher salaries.
How much more are we going to abuse the resources of the Earth? We are producing a lot of resource-consuming goods already, we don't really need to produce cell phones that we can toss after 60 minutes! I am as horrified of this as of the people who change cars every 1-2 years. To produce those cars you gotta consume a lot of energy, a lot of minerals, a lotof clean water and air, and then you use it one year only? And this cell phone is even worse, an hour only???? OK, let's move to another planet, this one we screwed up already.
(did you know that an average USA citizen consumes about 800 times more resource-units than a citizen of India?)
Actually, I strongly doubt Gates would read Macchiavelli. All he knows is one single citation: "anything is legitimate to achieve the goal". But Macchiavelli here intended some really universal goals, the good of the people of the country. IMHO, Gates doesn't give a friggin shit about the people. Actually, he does, as long as they (the people) look at the world through Windows.
My point is, Gates is not the literate guy who would read a piece of classical opus, not even if it would have repercussions on his decision-making (Macchiavelli and Sun Tzu come to my mind..). He is the barbarian/mob kind of ruler. And, as the "Microsoft Files" author said, he is now even MORE agressive. Any take on what could he do NOW? I even imagine scenarios of incursions on the government, and even worse... I fear a bit for judge Jackson's security.
Call me paranoid but I know what Microsoft and Gates (and his friends) is capable of. I still remember the e-mail written by Allchin about shooting [the competitor] witha gun. The gun was figurative speaking, but the attitude was of the murderor. The self-righteous, blinded by their own "truths". Dangerous!
for the clarificatoin. I admit that I am ignorant as to US history of car-industry. I guess I know better the IT history. I'm glad you cared to correct me.
It uses NetWAre filesystem as it's antive filesystem, on which you can mount namespaces, like, for example, Sun's NFS, Mac, OS/2, and VTAM (I believe, or some other IBM badass mainframe-related filesystem) and others. Today with NetWare 5 you have the option of using NSS (NetWare Storage Services) which is an incredibly scalable and fast native filesystem. It uses a balanced tree database instead of a FAT/Directory. The database is object oriented, and allows mount times of about 15 seconds for volumes of Terabyte size (which Novell actually demonstrated a year ago).
A mosquito-hinting robot has been my long-time idea/vision. I imagined it would be equipped with a tiny laser (maybe a bit more powerful than the ones used in the presentations) and would have very sophysticated object recognition, but it would not need to be particularly movable. The problem, though, is that the laser beam is dangerous for your eyes. The solution would be that these bots would fire only agains a mosquito that is on or against a very light surface (wall, fridge, washing machine, my white shirts.. etc). That could be a discriminator-the bot would not fire against a human figure. Or at least not at the head. Maybe one day I will really create such a gadget. You bet I am not friend of mosquitos.

here is info on Apache for BeOS
So, the really cool hting would be for Linux kernel to have pervasive multithreading.
Sure it was on purpose :o) and why were you moderated down?????

Are you basing your statement on the fact that the skulls found in Mexico probably belong to dead people?

No, it's more like Ford cars work only on Ford gas and Ford roads - in the 50's, when you more or less HAD TO buy Ford if you were in US.
