  1. Manage Your Cookies on Novell CEO Attacked by Cookie Monster · · Score: 2

I use a program called At Guard to deal with cookies. It does not just block those I do not want, but also allows me (upon visiting a site for the first time) to accept cookies from sites I wish to use them on (i.e. Slashdot.org). The program also has some nice firewall and add blocking features.

  2. What a bother over something so small on Apple Ending Engineering Credits in Products · · Score: 2

To me this just seems an awful large bother over such small things that don't cause any problems. I always enjoyed the little Easter eggs in programs, they are fun. Not that I think anyone reads the credits, but I always enjoyed having my name somewhere on the few programming jobs I've worked on.

The fact that Steve Jobs took the time to come up with a memo telling people that such things are banned seems a waste of time. Maybe Steve has too much time on his hands? Perhaps the same amount of time on his hands that the programmers have when they create such little eggs?

  3. I can't afford to fight on Y2K Movie Followup: The Slashdot Effect Gone Wrong · · Score: 2

I have to agree with Hemos on this one as well. Blaming the host is just not right. I might not agree with the FBI's stance, however if they came to my door and told me to take something off our systems at our company, it would be hard to say no.
I don't think we can expect every host who's pressured by the gov or any group to stand up to them all the time. There's more than just the question of removing a video here. There could be massive time, financial, and legal expenses for the host to fight such action. Goodness knows I don't have the resources to fight the FBI, and I can't be sure I would get help from organizations that do.

  4. I think my local Jr. High has more mature people on Interview: John Vranesevich Doesn't Really Answer · · Score: 1

I'm relatively new to Mr. Vranesevich's story. Here's what I think.
There seem so be allot of conflicting information about him and I wonder what is real. The story in the NYT seems awfully simple. It just seems allot like some two-bit movie script that any hack could come up with, and the type of story the media seems to publish frequently. "Bad guy" goes good, now "good guy" must defend himself against "bad guys." I take that article with a big salt lick of salt.
Reading Mr. Vranesevich's response pretty much ended my curiosity. I'm sure he's an intelligent young man and all, but simply put, he seems awfully immature. I've read flames on gaming message boards that read "your game sucks" that are more mature. While they are pointless, at least they don't ramble on forever and toss out dim witted threats right and left.
Simply put, my impression of Mr. Vranesevich is that he's a bitter young man who seems to enjoy provoking people and such. This one just seems to get a bit more attention and would seem to be fairly intelligent in certain areas. I do to Mr. Vranesevich, what I do with the kids who post "you suck" messages on the inet, I move on.

  6. Question???? on Legal Actions Against Linux-DVD authors · · Score: 1

In an article or two I read that it was Xing who forgot to secure their software and then using that they were able to crack the encryption. If that is the case I don't see how you can blame the guy who wrote the DVD-CSS decryption routines, even if they were weak.
    Is this not the case?

And lets say it is the programmer's fault. How do you legally define good and bad DVD-CSS decryption routines?

I can't imagine a contract stating: "If nobody cracks it, then your ok, if they do, we sue you."

Or perhaps that's how it is?

  7. I duno on Coca Cola Supply and Demand · · Score: 1

I am not sure how well this would work. Usually when I see a Coke machine I also see a Pepsi or similar machine nearby. All the competition would have to do is not implement such technology. They would save money not spending it on such machines and sell more due to the lower prices.

Also I wonder how many people would pay more on a hot day really? I would feel insulted by the higher price personally and would rather go without.

  11. adoption of Linux in the mainstream bad? on Games Drive Wider Linux Adoption · · Score: 1

Like many here I'm not sure I see what the comment about the fear of adopting Linux into the mainstream is all about?

It would seem every time a mainstream company invests in or starts shipping some Linux distribution everyone cheers, including me.

People who Game allot (at least the ones like me) have allot of time on their hands and often fill it with games. There is allot of young gamers out there who were born into the windows world and have stayed there to play games (for my games I have too). I think this is a great loyal consumer base that has the time to work with and enjoy Linux.

    Could I be considered disabled?

Maybe someone who's read more on this man could fill me in.
