  13. 1 provider doesn't get any better on Thoughts On Third-Party DSL Providers? · · Score: 2

I had a similar experience just setting up my DSL service. My Inet service and DSL service were ordered from USWest (USWorst).

Both the Telco DSL provider and Inet providers had different support lines and guidelines and would blame one another for the problems I was having. I won't go into detail to save time, but it was actually a mix of both of their problems. They constantly bitched and moaned how they're not able to be in "direct contact" with one another so that they won't have a competitive advantage and all.

Regardless of how accurate their claims were, it still gave both convenient excuses to make claims about who's problem it was that my DSL was not functioning. This just drew out the process and made it just as bad as if I still had an ISP from another company.

"As Linux grows because of its capabilities in other areas and its openness, it will gain market share, and the disparity between the two will decrease."

So if things were different they wouldn't be the same. Go figure. & Linux will improve over time. Oh my gosh, what a revelation.

You're saying that this isn't a comparison of the OS. I think the article was pretty straight forward in saying that it was just comparing Windows vs. Linux 3D Performance in Q3A. Do we really need to give Linux a hug and say "Don't worry that doesn't really matter because it will get better in the future." and make excuses every time someone points out a short coming?

Linux comes up short when comparing Windows vs. Linux 3D Performance in Q3A. Accept it and help provide suggestions in improving things or move on. Excuses doesn't make Linux any better.

I don't mean to be hyper critical here. I hear allot of "Well windows has lots of developers." or "Well windows has X or Y." and such statements when Linux comes up short in certain areas. In the end that doesn't help anything, in fact Linux does do poorly in these tests. I refer to the last line in the Linux Advocacy how to.

I can't imagine IBM making that big of a commitment to remove OS/390 on such a successful product as the S/390. There's tons of S/390s out there running OS/390 and doing just fine.

This is not to say Linux won't be good. However, reliability is one of it's big selling points and I'm not sure many of IBM's current S/390 customers will want to just hop into Linux when they already have a proven product.

  18. Doesn't sound bad on Can I Lend DVDs? · · Score: 2

From the short lines of the text that we have here this doesn't sound much different than the rules that have been applied to VHS for ages.

  23. Teacher Desks on In Search Of The Perfect Geek Desk? · · Score: 2

I love my current "teacher desk." It's big and is VERY durable and can take tons of punishment. I got it at a school system surplus warehouse. Cost me $50 and was such a great deal. "Teacher Desks" are just great for taking the weight of multiple monitors and taking some punishment from me when I'm working. Easy as heck to clean too, it has some type of composite material on top. I've spilt everything on it and it comes right off.

In my experience few school systems publicly have "sales" but if you find one and can find the right person and ask. Most have misc desks they can get rid of and are willing to haggle on price (but $50 wasn't a bad initial offer anyway).

In my impression strong beliefs in internet privacy, open source, free software and a strong contingent of anti-MS feelings have built up an almost religious belief that one day there will be some sort of great legal or otherwise apocalyptic event where one if not all of these beliefs will be challenged. I'm concerned that people might use this occasion to try to fulfill their own prophecy.

There's always talk about the great GPL lawsuit where a company (the prophecy wouldn't quite be as nice if it was just an individual) violates the GPL and a lawsuit is filed and GPL is tested in court. There's much rhetoric about how the government and corporations are trying to take away our privacy. There's always unsubstantiated claims about MS's conspiracy to destroy free or open source software. Personally I believe many people actually want some situation like this to occur to confirm their beliefs about MS, or corporate greed, or government oppression. It's always easy to be the wounded hero.

I'm not saying I do not believe in some ways some of these beliefs are true. However I worry that this might be chosen as the great event. It's simply the wrong fight to fight. Slashdot would lose, and for good reason. The information posted is clearly copyrighted material in it's entirety from MS. It's a straightforward case. I would rather see questions of freedom be challenged where it can truly show that people need to pay attention and gather further support, not die a martyr in a dirty case.
