  2. media attention on Bayesian Filters Predict Sundance · · Score: 1

By releasing their results early, they have biased this year's results with media attention. Imagine a judge making a decsion between two films that she liked. Does he pick the same one as the computer? If a computer can do her job what does the world need him for? So she picks the movie that was not predicted.

The correct methodology would have been to entrust the results to a third party to be released after the event was over.

By the way, I am aware that my judge is a he/she, it is Sundance after all.

As noted in other posts, the iseries will run Linux and Unix natively. So unless you specified OS400 on the iseries, those who answered Unix were not off base. To say iseries is like saying intel based, it specifies the hardware. This is a major thrust of the marketing surrounding the iseries, so IBM will be dissapointed to learn of their failure to educate you on this matter. In the meantime, perhaps you should enroll in a course on platform comprehension (whatever that means).

Fun is fun and business is business. If you allow unscrupulous users to financially capitalize on the success of slashdot, you risk bringing the site's standards down amid a torrent of spam posts.

My suggestion would be to not censor links to personal pages that are too orange, but instead establish a guideline for editors to follow concerning the commercial use of a slashdot post. In the case of beatles, his scam is likely to hurt pagerank which is not directly your concern, but I think a clear argument can be made that it is an unethical practice that should not be supported.

While they use the number of patent issuances going up, they seem to ignore the fact that patent filings have also sky-rocketed along with them. If the percentage of allowances per examinations are the same, then the stat is pretty irrelevant since the number would just be a case of more cases being viewed because of greater numbers of filings and more examiners examining cases.

This paragraph assumes that the average quality of an application is the same despite the marked increase in filings. I don't believe you can justify that assumption. In fact I am quite sure it is wrong.

  7. Re-frame the debate on Senate Fails To Reauthorize Patriot Act Provisions · · Score: 5, Insightful

I'm going to put on my flame retardant suit and fire this one up. The problem is that people want to kill us. In order to protect ourselves, we can simply stop everyone who wants to kill us from succeding (Patriot Act). This works great if there are very few people who want to kill us. If there are too many people who want to kill us then limiting that number becomes crucial.

Unfortunately, this means we have to ask ourselves why people want to kill us. The GWB story is that they are jealous because we are the embodiment of god's will (I'm paraphrasing). Personally, I think it is more closely related to foreign policy especially as it relates to domestic energy policies.

If the notion that we might want to understand why terrorists, and deposed dictators don't like us is too unpatriotic, then I guess we will continue with the same type of policies. Considering that we sold Saddam WMDs and trained and funded Al Qaeda this might be worth a second look.

As a marsksman, what happens when you hit your target? Another impulse right? If you have aimed well, you will have the impact desired correct? Therefore the metaphor stands. But wait, both the target and projectile are destroyed (or at least damaged) in the process. So you're right, it is an invalid metaphor. Unless the target represents a problem or a competitor. Oh but wait what about the bullet, if we destroy that, there goes web 2.0. I guess thats ok since web 2.0 is generally acknowledged to be a stupid term anyhow.

Unfortunately, I fear the time is growing nearer when that very idea becomes relevant in the US. Did anyone else have a problem with the portion of the article stating that documents were not released because of executive privilege? Since when does that apply to all agencies in the executive branch. This is a precedent set by this administration that seems to have gone mostly without remark, and will surely be a problem for years to come.
