Ubuntu is about as new user friendly as a 747. Try PCLinuxOS instead...and PCLinuxOS was forked from Mandrake 9.2 back in the day...it's what Mandrake should have become.
Kaspersky AV has always scanned RAR files...little danger if you use kaspersky. As far as firewalls blocking rar files...simply solved by turning the extensions into.00,.01,.02, etc.
1) MEPIS has the benefits of all packages Debian and apt-get
2) it is crossover office and wine ready (the kernel)
3) installation of my driver was %> apt-get install nvidia-glx and I was done
4) UTGOTY, DoomIII, and UT2K4 play friggen awesome on my setup. Using Cedega, I'm able to get even more.
MEPIS MEPIS MEPIS MEPIS. I can't say anything else. Go. Download. Try. You will see. It's a live CD with a 7 click hard drive install...and it is debian and can use debian repositories.
Burn it to live and check it out for yourself. There is a reason for it being #8 on distrowatch before it is even 2 years old. It's the best Desktop distro currently out.

Tell him to try MEPIS instead. I haven't found another debian based distro easier to install (even easier than knoppix). And it autoconfigures just about anything. It even detected and installed my USB CDRW!
I'll never go to any other distro for desktop linux. Servers are another story:)

Desktop - ProMEPIS or Debian. Hands down the easiest to patch, administer, and use.
Server - No contest...ClarkConnect. No other Firewall/Server/Gateway is easier to administer.
