here here. I'm not a kernel hacker but the lack of stable APIs is obviously hurting the development of Linux.

Although it would be great to have only open source well maintained stable drivers we have to live in the real world where hardware manufacturers aren't going to release enough details to write an open source driver. We can encourage them to give us the information we need all we want but it's not going to happen any time soon.

What we might be able to do though though is get them to write a quality closed source driver for us but that is only going to happen if they they only have to write _one_ driver per major kernel release.

Linus might have a dream but he's taken one-to-many draws on the bong if he thinks companies are going to jump through the hoops he's currently providing them.

As an example: who thinks that Apache would be the most popular web server if ever point point release changed the api enough that half your web applications broke. No one would touch it with a barge pole and if you are the type of person that _would_ still use it then I think perhaps you have to much time on your hands.

    Flame away :o)

    Thanks

Thats actually what I am running at the moment.

Its a shame more projects don't fit that criteria though.

What we need (and I have looked around so this might actually exist) is an open source frame work for projects and a meta-language for describing them. I would think this would be a good wide scale test bed for web-services and soap. The security would be difficult though.

    Whats a photonic crystal then?

I can't believe you mentioned it and didn't then tell us. I would be happy to supply computer time for projects such as yours.

When I look for an DC project I look for one that fits the following criteria in this order of importance:

a)The results are published freely with no restriction on there use (so non-commercial basically - they can pay for computer time if they want it)
c)There is a linux version (preferably command line)
b)The software requires no user intervention (beyond maybe starting it)
d)The project looks like it is doing real science (this doesn't discount SETI@Home but I consider their chance of success low so I tend to steer clear of it)

You would be supprised how few projects fit all 4.

I have yet to mount the speakers (for a home cinema system) and had no where else to put them.

The CD I burnt was a mix for a party we had. I only intended to use it once and bin it but it didn't make it to the bin and got stuck between the speakers. I remembered it after a couple of months and was supprised it still worked so I figured I would find out how long it will last for. If it still works I might use it for this years party as well.

What do you do with your CD's to screw up 90% of your collection (I am assuming you have more than half a dozen CDs or a freak accident could have easily wiped out 4 or 5)? Do you use them as body armour in a war zone or something?

I don't have many bought CDs (compared to some people), maybe a 100 or so, but I don't think I have ever damaged one to the point where it wouldn't play.

People also complain about how easily damaged CD-Rs are but I have had one jammed between two speakers for about 8 months now with no protection and it still plays fine. Maybe I'm just lucky I guess.

No - don't ask why I have a CD jammed betwen two speakers.

Look at all these great sites you could block:

I wish people wouldn't say that everything "organic" is good - its a chemistry term. Organic in this context doesn't mean natural. The material in these displays is not found in nature and is quite probably highly toxic. Organic (in the chemistry context) means made of carbon and hydrogen and possibly including other atoms (for instance one of these OLED molecules contains Fluorine). The nerve gas sarin is "organic" is it good for you? What about DDT? How about plastic? Yes; plastic is organic but it doesn't biodegrade.

Ok. I have got that off my chest time to go back to lurking
