And you are? And I should rip your head off because? And what partisan politics are we tangoing to? And what is it you are saying that I should think about?

Wow, that comment came out of left field, didn't it? How's this applicable to chess? Stupid Americans, always relating to the world by thinking of themselves first...it's not all about you. Really.

Sorry, I don't understand these baseball analogies. We did not play baseball in school. My guess is you are trying to pay a compliment (left field? lefties are smarter right?) and you are genuinely asking how chess in school is related to creationism in school and how in the heck is that related to priorities in education.

Well... and I'll keep it vewy vewy simple here: I don't know. Just seemed funny to me and I guess to others. If you have to explain the joke....

Finally, I believe you inferred that I implied that this means "Americans" are "Stupid". Au contraire, mon frere. I think citizens of countries in North America are on the whole, Smart. Just sometimes, some of us, and in this case some United Statesians, act Stupid or do Stupid things.

Elevating creationism to the level of scientific theory is stupid.

Hey! I just got it! Teaching creationism is stupid! And teaching chess is smart! That's the joke! Well doggie. I have to thank you for your comment as I did not realize what I had actually said.

All in all I have to agree with what I infer that you implied: this is NOT funny at all! Oh, and it isn't all about me ---- you are right again --- it is all about you.

    Thanks for that!

  6. Raises bar/Two edged sword on Self-Wiping Hard Drives From Toshiba · · Score: 2

This raises the bar in terms of effort required to safely capture the data. If the system is effective then the drive electronics have to be bypassed. That is, either transplant new control electronics into the drive frame or transplant the platters. Clearly beyond the means of the average thief and raises the cost/effort level for law enforcement. That is unless Toshiba provides a "Law Enforcement SDK".

OTOH, the sword cuts two ways: not only does the drive provide protection from unauthorized access, it also puts the data under constant risk. Any data on the drive has a veritable Damocle's sword hanging over it. The possibility of accidentally triggering the destruct mode seems very real. Think about some of the false positive issues with that used to occur with Windows licensing where a minor system change made Windows think it was on a new installation. Happened to me several times and put me on the phone to Microsoft. ie: I added ram once, going from a single 512M to 2x1G and my activation cancelled; another time I upgraded the video card. Innocent but triggered the software detector.

Reminds me of Dr. Strangelove for some reason. I have an image of Slim Pickins riding my Toshiba disk into a mushroom cloud of destruction. Sorry, off topic. Damn OCD ;->

Spelling out ALS is not going to help and from that point you'd have to draw a picture for them.

Submission description was good; complainer was lazy and/or ignorant. Plenty of replies in the text with full descriptions of ALS which the lazy reader could find enlightenment from.

ALS or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or Lou Gehrig's Disease.

    Quoting from Wikipedia

"[ALS] is a form of motor neuron disease caused by the degeneration of neurons located in the ventral horn of the spinal cord and the cortical neurons that provide their afferent input. The condition is often called Lou Gehrig's disease in North America, after the famous New York Yankees baseball player who was diagnosed with the disease in 1939. The disorder is characterized by rapidly progressive weakness, muscle atrophy and fasciculations, spasticity, dysarthria, dysphagia, and respiratory compromise. Sensory function generally is spared, as is autonomic, and oculomotor activity. ALS is a progressive,[1] fatal, neurodegenerative disease with most affected patients dying of respiratory compromise and pneumonia after 2 to 3 years; although occasional individuals have a more indolent course and survive for many years."

It isn't a computer techie nerd term, it is a medical term. ALS is in the news about as much as MS so I think most folk would reasonably conclude that anyone who crawls out of their personal rut now and then would have heard about it. Also, if you don't know what ALS is then the expansion probably would not help. At one time "Lou Gehrig's" would have been more common than ALS but I think it may be the other way around now.

Well, one thing that you can do is push for charter schools to be set up under the umbrella of the public school system. That is, if a charter has enough support from parents and certain standards are met then space will be found within existing school locations to implement the charter group.

Go here to read more: http://education.alberta.ca/parents/choice/charter.aspx

The variety of education offerings is impressive and goes beyond the list given. There are smaller groups that have been organized within school districts that offer, for example, hybrid home and public schooling.

If you passionately believe in a particular approach to teaching your kids, it is very possible to get that approach up and running and integrated into the public school system. ...but the parents have to do the paperwork and the organizing.

Well, he may not have a degree in education but I wouldn't dismiss his comments out of hand.

Our province/city regularly gets high marks on international standardized testing (across the board math, science, language arts, etc) yet many of the bright stars who are achieving these results can't seem to put a logical argument together (personal experience). Go figure. Sure they are young at 18 when they pop out the end of the line but it seems to me that a lot of potential is lost that will never be made up.

IMHO schools are factories and the standardized testing results are a big part of how schools are evaluated. School admins have a lot riding on the testing outcome. Let me be clear: the testing is not for the benefit of your child; it is for the benefit of the school administration. If your kid comes out at the end of G12 alive and well and prepared for what comes next then it is likely a result of individual teachers and good parenting but definitely not the system.

Problem or project based learning is a way to promote critical thinking as well as passion for a subject. It can also foster initiative and individuality within a co-operative team. And it is not so boring.

However, this approach doesn't easily evaluate down to nice numbers that bureaucrats (and parents), and it takes more effort to implement. You also have to spend more time with each individual student to evaluate their progress. Seems like 98% of my kids report sheets (no longer report cards) are canned statements with no individual comments. That would have to change.

Well, at least the Woz is interesting.
