  3. "with all the software included with Linux" on WinInformant Says Windows More Secure Than Linux · · Score: 1

An interesting Sub-topic would be in reply to the numerous posts about all the software that is included in a Linux Distro.

I thought everyone complains that MSFT bundles too many apps with their OS and that's why they are a monopoly.

People here seem to claim they don't bundle much of anything compared to Linux Distros. So do Slashdotters think MSFT is not a monopoly?

  5. The experience better than the machine... on Playstation II Launch Notes From the Field · · Score: 2

I arrived at my local Kmart, er, Big K at about 5:00AM. Duty called, friends were counting on me. There were three cars frosted over. One with an occupant. There were 6 PS2s reported to be available. At 5:30 our overzealous local K manager came out to the cars to hand out pre-written numbered business cards. By 6:00 AM, three of us gathered in my car. For two hours, eventhough we could go and return, we swapped gaming stories.

By 8:00 AM, at store opening the six of us lucky golden ticket winners were somehow connected. While at the counter 4 calls came in, each for a playstation.

The machine does not excite me too much. In a few months it will be discounted, but the experience of being one of the first will still be as rich as the morning fog.

  6. Life after 5 months with TIVO... on CmdrTaco's Week with Tivo · · Score: 1

I feel compelled to comment on how my feelings towards TIVO have changed after 5 months of use.

In the first couple of weeks, there was a HUGE excitement. Coming home from work, waking up, my thoughts would be "I wonder what TIVO recorded for me?" Everyday was like Christmas.

Shows I long loved and forgot about are still on, only at 4:30AM. It was great. The you told TIVO you liked the show, and you got Overdosed on episodes.

Two issues came up later. I became in the habit of not worrying about whether something like X-Files would be recorded. Unfortunately, one day the show was delayed and TIVO didn't know it. I'm not sure it could have, but it would have really been nice if it had.

Also, it now seems to delete shows too quickly. Since the X-Files incident, I sometimes check to make sure "it's there", TIVO thinks I watched the entire episode, so it deletes it. I now have to override this by using "save until I delete" Even if I don't preview a show, it deletes too quickly.

The other issue is now everyone wants me to output things to VCR tape. It's a pain. There's a ton of requests from friends like "Can you have TIVO record..." I think I'm gonna tell them TIVO is broken.

So, After 5 months I'd still give TIVO at least 3 thumbs up.

  7. Forget Money Angle, Get References! on Linux & Education - How To Get It For Your School · · Score: 5

After some of these comments, I hate to admit that I am a HS CS teacher and systems director.

I would recommend you find some schools using Linux and see if they'll talk to your school. I'd be happy to. Show them our site or Beacon School and then have them email us.

I would suspect that the reason you don't learn about Linux in the classroom is because your teacher doesn't know about it. Offer to do a presentation on it for extra credit or no credit at all. If the teacher turns you down, then you've found your problem.

We've been running Linux for about 3 years now and I couldn't be happier. Our students and faculty benefit from the increased services and especially the uptime! Linux has lowered cost and headaches.

Also, the first three weeks of my programming class are devoted to Linux. All assignments are done on the Linux server.

You could also start a LUG and get interest that way.

    Good Luck!
