it might take you a year to count the veins in each petal

I put this on my cubicle wall. I may put a copy of it up next to my mirror. I've always felt that a good kick in the ass is better than a cup of coffee in the morning. :)

After reading all the flamebait and crap people posted, this is particularly relevant.

cDc, enjoy yourselves. (Not that my approval/disapproval would matter to you)

And should our paths ever cross in our respective bids for world domination, may the best man win. :)

When I was about 12, my parents upgraded their will, and I got to meet a lawyer for the first time. He had the seal of the state of New York on his wall, and I asked him why the lady was in the blindfold. He said he didn't know.

Later on, I found out why Justice was blindfolded, and have always wondered if he really didn't know, or if he just didn't want to explain it to me.

The worst part was that he had been, at one time, a congressman.

Communism is the belief that we could eliminate poverty, hunger, warfare, and many other "bad things" if people worked together for the good of all.

I don't believe in communism, mostly because people suck. I don't exclude myself from that belief, either. I _know_ that if I lived in a communist society, I wouldn't get out of bed in the morning to go to work; I have trouble enough when my having a bed depends on getting out of bed.

But I get away from my point. Communism is NOT bad. Its the idea that a society can be beneficial for all involved. It doesn't work, but that doesn't make the IDEA a bad thing. Maybe someday, people will aspire to be greater than we are currently, and it WILL work. Maybe it will STILL be a bad thing.

The fact is, that the people in power in the USSR, (and historically, in China) have followed a policy that I would fight against with all my being; namely the belief that "IDEAS CAN BE DANGEROUS"

If you're not following me by this point, go, read "1984" by Orwell, and then come back.

There is a quote, and I'm sorry to say that I don't remember who said it, but it goes something along the lines of: "I would give my life to defend the rights of a man to shout at the top of his lungs that which I would spend my life arguing against." The original was more clear, and if anyone knows the exact quote, please share it.

I don't believe that anyone in power during the Red Scare actually was afraid of communism. It was merely a political tool; a way of getting the people worked up into a frenzy; mob rule which gave them almost unlimited power.

The symetry of the whole scheme, in retrospect, is that which the people feared so much, was EXACTLY the cause to which they were assisting!

My points are: Communism is not a bad thing. Ideas are a great thing. If hope is the best thing, _THINKING_ is not far behind it. Ideas lead to thinking, therefore censorship prohibits thinking. QED

Personally, I find this fascinating. I feel sorry for all those that had to endure things like this, but from an impartial perspective, its fascinating.

I was home-schooled. When my parents took me out of school (3rd grade) my parents were told by many people just how wrong home-schooling was. I would grow up without any friends, unable to function adequately in society, essentially an outcast. Needless to say, I don't consider this to be true. I graduated, went to college, and am now a sucessful software engineer. This is all my opinion, and I tend to be rather partial, but I consider myself to be a rather outgoing, personable, and get along well with co-workers, friends, etc.

Now I read stories about people who _feel_ like outcasts. (In an adult society, which most of us live in, IMHO nobody-everybody is an outcast (I'll make an exception of mentally ill ppl)) I feel that everyone is different, unique, and if you're not, you probably don't exist. Differences make us stronger, especially if you believe in evolution. This may sound like a bunch of hippie crap, but sex was alot easier in the sixties; I'm all for that. :)

Its an interesting comparison, and a really small sample to make statistics out of. :)

OTOH, my brother was also homeschooled, and he never liked it, and eventually went to a normal public school. I did have four years of being in public school to learn to hate it, whereas he was homeschooled from the beginning, and more mainstream than I. (Don't get me wrong, I love the guy. (You only truly love those you want to kill.) :)

Now where was I going with this? I dunno, and its getting late. I wanna hear about people who bucked this trend, or any homeschoolers who feel the same way.

Good quote. I have a copy of Clemens' autobiography at home, I should see if I can find that.

Unfortunately, I don't feel that it is applicable. Not only do I read a great deal (3-4 books a week) but I occasionally write as well (not very well, as was pointed out earlier). The discussion revolved around technical documentation, which is a far cry from literature.

The major difference between the two being, in my estimation, that technical writing contains only information (for the most part) while literature contains more, such as meaning, wisdom, and knowledge. (Oh, and humor. We must not forget humor.)

I really wish I had a good comeback quote. :)

I object to your first rule. Programmers CAN write good english. Programmers HATE to write. Let me clarify a bit. All programmers hate to write. Some have the ability to write good english.

I agree with your second and third rules though.

The last company I was at was big into design, they went through a serious process and sometimes the people who wrote the design were the ones that wrote the code.

This company has a different design process. It goes something like this:

"We need the software to do X."

That usually completes the requirements phase.

The design phase is more strenuous, and usually involves a meeting, and sometimes a document. I don't usually write the document.

I don't know which approach is better, but I know I am capable of writing documentation, I just don't want to. :)

The other difference is that the previous company I worked for produced software for a client. I agree that good documentation is a must in this case. The company I work for now is producing software to run our product, which means that the software has to meet the needs of the instrument we hook it up to, and gives the software a baseline set of requirements to work from.

Every time I read an article, I see someone who has written in there "Is this REALLY news for nerds?" The answer, in short is, yes. No matter what you pick, you can find a group of nerds/geeks/hackers who are interested in it. This is probably true for everything up to Disco, and then we'll go with a "maybe".

So let up on the posters, get a life, and don't worry about what type of TTL is in your machine.

As far as the _topic_: I think that the people who produce a work, be it a painting, a piece of music, or a movie, these people should be able to have control over their own works. On the other hand, these (heh) lawyers (rotfl) have about a snowballs chance in hades of stopping anyone from downloading anything.
