  1. Ho Hum on California Sets Fines for Spyware · · Score: 2, Interesting

I don't even have to read more than the few sentences posted here. Considering the whole purpose of the legislature these days of capitalist enlightenment is to ensure businesses can rifle through our wallets with impunity and our whole job is to consume, I am sure every commercial entity will find the loop holes since I am sure 'they ' and their lobbyists crafted this self-contradicting nightmare bill. Its 'feel good' legislation at its finest. Kind of like invading Iraq: it didn't solve anything, but it made the public feel good for a while. I'll bet no one is ever prosecuted under this--ever. Even the RIAA's putting spyware in WMA files on P2P hosts will be exempted I am sure.

  2. Already voluntarily done to a lesser degree on Privacy in the Woods? · · Score: 1

As a mountaineer and alpinist in California's Sierra, I can tell you we already: 1) have to have overnight permits which are used to limit impact on the back country, 2) are asked to check in with the Rangers with a trip plan including locations and dates including return date so they can moutn a search if we are overly late, and 3) let them know if we see anything worth noting (abandoned campsites indicating someone is lost, etc. It is voluntary and useful. I never felt the rangers were prying or trying to play big brother. Most of the abuse of informatton in my opinion comes from the private sector or power-hungry bureaucrats. Rangers aren't in it for the money or power--they love the backcountry liek I do and they want to help you. I also think it would cut down the cost of rescuing the arrogant morons who think they are Natty Bumpo and get in a bind deep in the backcoutnry and costs thousands of dollars to find and rescue. Keep privacy concerns focused on the material breaches of privacy and quit taking the typical 'black or white, all-or-nothing, love it or leave it' narrow-minded American approach to everything to the poitn of irrationality that gives us a bad name around the world.

But if soldiers questioned the motives of their leadersBEFORE carrying out their orders, they might not execute them and the butchery of civilians for instance that hte US is conducting in Iraq nad di in Vietname. Then were would we be? Oh wait.. I think another Nazi put it best: Gilbert: 'We got around to the subject of war again, and I said that, contrary to his attitude, I did not think that the common people are very thankful for leaders who bring them war and destruction.' Goehring: '... But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship.' Gilbert: ' There is one difference, I pointed out. In a democracy, the people have some say in the matter through their elected representatives, and in the United States, only Congress can declare wars.' Goehring: ' Oh, that is all well and good, but, voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.' --'Nuremberg Diaries,', G.M. Gilbert, in which the author interviews Hermann Goehring

  5. I use QT on WInXP all the time when forced to on NPR's Car Talk Dumping RealMedia · · Score: 1

I have to use XP at work but try to use non-M$ software whenever possible (Mozilla, QT, etc.). QT runs fine. IF people are having problems, ti is probably because of the brain registry and otehr evil M$ machinations that keep many applications from being stable when mass-installed on Windows. Mostly things work for most people but sometimes not. Your failure to get it working says more about your lack of skill with computers than it does about QT quality.

    - It doesn't matter if you don't like the owner - It doesn't matter that they charge outrageous prices: this is a free market and you are not force to buy - They still own the property and property ownership rights are fundamental to our society and must be protected. - Just because stealing is easy doesn't mean it is justified If you don't like their tactics, stop supporting their war machine as you do when buying their products which fills their war chest. I haven't bought a new CD in six years. Otherwise: shut up already. You are paying them to harass you.
