I know this is a pro linux site( though why you have to be anti-MS to be pro-linux is beyond me. And how anyone over the age of 16 can get all worked up over a OS to the point of thrashing all others is also beyond the thinking of any sane adult) MS has released an annoucement about a MAJOR overhaul of IE here- http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb; en-us;Q834489 God forbid this should make a slashdot article however news worthy. It seems to me to fall under the banner of "news for nerds, stuff that matters" but i guess not. i'm not pro MS or linux or netware or whatever. I'm just a network engineer who has to work with these products to make a living. and from that standpoint this is pretty major news and something MS should be given kudos for. Have some objectivity. It seems to me that most posters to this site don't actually work with these products but just tinker with them over sips of jolt cola in thier parents basement otherwise no sane adult would get into these "my operating system is better than yours" wars. Its a product, thats it. wheter linux or windows or solaris or whatever. MS has made a lot of mistakes and will continue to do so, but give credit where its due. and grow up, get a girlfriend/boyfriend and a job and relax for chrissakes. a little objectivity wouldn't hurt ethier.

i use the newest hp smart array controller. i've only been in IT for 2 years so maybe i'm a little stoopid as to the particulars of why my system will bottleneck using those controllers. i give. you win. what i meant by proprietary is running a system made by only that company with an os that only runs on that system. while compaq bios may be closed, the rest of the hardware is not. i'm not trying to write a linux device driver here or anything... thanks for your reply.

no need to be rude... we get our compaqs thru a third party for about $3000 with a raid 5 array on top of the specs you mentioned. and so what if the bios is prorietary? how many times do you screw with that? and if you are and its not just to hack around, you're doing something wrong... so thats what Mac stands for?! wow, thanks

    1. can't they get this from HP/Compaq or some other vendor? possibly cheaper? 2.the server is traditionally on the backend away from the end user and configured and maintained by a professional staff. user friendliness is not an issue. 3. see 2. Apple is seen as a specific end user os not a server system. I think apple sales staff will have a hard time selling anyone in the corporate IT world. and most apple end users will probably not be running a server from home anytime soon.

have nothing against MAC users. i'm OS agnostic. AND people should be able to just do their jobs without worrying about whats under the hood. what i'm asking is why a company would use a MAC server. i don't think that many MAC users will want to set up a server at home esp. since as you claim, they just want to get the job done and not tinker. and a company will probably use windows or linux/unix for thier backend. i just can't picture selling an MAC server to an IT manager. it's probably harder than selling linux. who's the audience for this?

MAC users are hardly known for their tech expertise. their skills are primarlly in graphics editing. MACs are overpriced pretty little boxes. not something i'd want to run my network. sorry slap open-bsd on a compaq dl 380(which costs less than an IMAC). the hardware is properitary and over priced despite the open os. sorry i clicked away too fast...

why the hell would apple make a server? more importantly, what company would use an apple server over a linux/*bsd/commerical unix server? i don't get it. do i want a photoshop server or maya server? where is the market for this. i work at as a sys admin at a huge liquor ditributor in manhattan and "apple" and "server" in the same sentence would get me laughed out of my IT dept. the only thing apple has in common with servers is the price tag for thier IMACs. crazy..

Its just a test. why so upset? some companies value it and some don't. Its hard to judge someone with no experience. this allows a foot in the door. kinda like a degree. the more experience you have the less important a degree or cert becomes. but its a good place to start when you're just starting a new field. all test are flawed. and i've met some pretty clueless people with C.S. degrees when it came to networking and hardware even after RTFMing. having a ccna or mcse doesn't mean youre an idiot and it also doesn't mean you know what you're doing either. same thing for degrees as well

i think you need to relax.. people need to use pc's for email, work, resumes, online shopping, etc. in other words, they need to get thier jobs done and move on with life. they are not in IT, they are not hobbyists, etc. they use a pc as a tool like a car or a microwave. no one should have to understand tranistor logic, learn api's,boolean algebra to do this. that's what IT is for. a pc SHOULD be as simple as a microwave for the general populace. they are not idiots. just as they are not computer enthusiasts or programmers. i for one have very little time to learn how an internal combustion engine works and shouldn't have to in order to drive my car. i may use linux at home, i work in IT, and i like to screw around coding at home. But that's MY job and hobby. i don't expect everone else to have it. just as i don't want to take apart my car and tinker with it on the weekends. the complex stuff of computing should be on the backend and abstracted to the end users. that's why we get paid to maintain configure and take care of that. and thats why linux will only be on that backend and not in front of the average user. its the height of arrogance to look down on your mother, grandmother, etc because she does not share your interest in a small specfic subset of life(though it may be a huge part of our lives). linux is for servers and comp sci students and computer hobbyist. IT IS NOT FOR THE END USER TRYING TO WRITE A RESUME OR SEND AN EMAIL OR SURF THE WEB,ETC. even if it were, they would not be taking advantage of its full capabilities anyhoo. windows was created for that very purpose. linux zealots trying to move linux from the server backend to the desktop is as silly as microsoft trying to move windows from the desktop to the server backend. and i'm pretty much OS agnostic. each have thier own purpose. why try to make it do something it was never meant to do except as an afterthought? who cares? i have no stock in MS or in Redhat or any linux corp. so it does me nothing to have one succeed or the other fail. both will always be around and logical careful people will use either for a hole or propose it fills. relax. and go easy on your grandma. she deserves better. as does joe sixpack for that matter. thanks
