B. You are wrong. RAID 1 is *definitely* faster than a plain JBOD disk when it comes to reads. Striping doesn't come into play in this scenario. What makes RAID 1 faster is that there are multiple copies of the SAME data on different spindles. While disk #1 is retrieving blocks 1-100, disk #2 is retrieving blocks 101-200 and disk #3 is working on retrieving blocks 201-300 (a very simplified example). Three disks working in parallel to provide three times the throughput of a single disk.
With RAID 1 (mirroring), an intelligent RAID controller will distribute the read requests among the members of the RAIDset. Often times you can choose between "round robin" and "least busy" to determine how the I/Os get distributed to the various members.
For maxium performance, create a RAID 1 set that has more than two members. The more members in your RAID 1 set, the faster things will be read.
I was going to mention the Netscreen IDP but you beat me to the punch. I had an IDP that protected 141.106.0.0/16. I had the Honeypot feature enabled so that if you scanned certain addresses, the IDP would blacklist your source address for 30 minutes. It worked *very* well for shunning lazy portscanning kiddies.
The IDP is a very impressive piece of technology. A very good complement to a Layer 3 firewall.
>One caveat for having no POTS - Store credit cards.
I call bullshit. I've been living without POTS for more than three years. I'm Cell only. I have had no problem with store credit or even building a new home (and re-financing it multiple times as rates went down).
When I built my current home two years ago, I never even had SBC come out to connect the phone wiring in the house to the little green pod in the backyard. The house is not connected to Ma Bell at the physical layer (I do however have Time Warner cable with Road Runner).
How can a store tell if your phone number goes to a cell phone or a POTS phone when you are filling-out a credit app?
> Mirroring can never be faster than a single drive and will sometimes be slower.
Where did you get this wonderful piece of misinformation?
Mirroring is always faster (when reading) than a single disk.
I am amazed by the number of people who are not aware of the performance benefits of RAID1.

A. Grow a set and login, AC.

Actually, leerpm is right.

Autonin:
Are you a Netscreen customer or a VAR?
Just curious,

>i never used Home PGUP PgDn End Ins
I take it that you never ran a VT terminal emulator on your PC and invoked the Extensible Versatile Editor in VMS.
Those six keys are crucial to having an enjoyable experience with EVE. Also, having the "Do" key mapped to Scroll Lock is the cat's pajamas.
In days gone by, I could do things with EVE so cool that it would almost cause a tear in the space-time continuum. But I am a VMS jockey no longer...

Ok, how about:
FuckOffnDie
or
FOAD
Personally, I would lean toward the less hostile messages like:

>"What's Your #?" To the hottie in the car on the motorway."
And her reply to you...
