  1. 1.7.2 messed up my prefs on Security-Updated Versions Of Mozilla Released · · Score: 1, Interesting

I did the uninstall install routine and everything was borged: I couldn't close tabs, was unable to go back one page and the context menu was gone. Took me really, really long to fix this manually.

The next time someone posts a link to a video instead of each and everyone trying to get the files and slashdotting the server in the process we do the following: Everyone flips a coin 10 times. The lucky guys (1 in 1024) whose coin flips all come up head actually go and download the files. Whose who got the files seed a .torrent. No Slashdotting => happy slashdot crowd!

  4. Fission is stupid. Wish we had fusion ready to go. on Bruce Sterling On Lovelock's Pro-Nuclear Stance · · Score: 1, Informative

What is so inherently stupid about fission is that you need lots of fuel at one place in order to sustain the criticality of the reactor. A fission reactor is critical (the normal state of operation) when the number of produced neutrons is equal to the number of lost neutrons. Since neutrons are lost through the surface and produced inside the core you want the ratio of volume to surface to be large. That means a huge reactor core. In contrast to the fission reactor which stores the energy for millions of households for a couple of years there is only a few grams of Hydrogen-isotopes in a fusion reactor. Even in a run-away scenario the fuel is used up very quickly and nothing spectacular happens.

  6. Re:What about tricking the software? on Indiana First With Computerized Grading · · Score: 1

".....The system was tested over a 2-year pilot program and produced results virtually identical to those of trained readers. " I assumed the system was trained with regular essays. The students who wrote those worked under the premise that their essay would be graded by a real person. If I were a student now in Indiana I would no longer try to write good essays but try to trick the system. Since the automatic grading system lacks true understanding it should be easy to find some basic rules (like: use fancy words, make long sentences, obey grammar, ...) which lead to good grades. The next step would be to write a program which produces top graded essays and needs only a list of key-words as input.

    ... supposedly unbreakable quantum ...
It's based on the fact that you can not clone a quantum state. That's a law of nature and not some opinion. That means Quantum Cryptography is unbreakable. Period. (The implementation may be breakable but the underlying principle is 100% safe)
