Symantec has a post on their forums here explaining the situation. They claim that it was an erroneously unsigned update that caused the problem, and the erasure of forum posts was due to spamming of the forum.
I don't think having cameras in public places is really giving up any freedoms. If they had cameras in my home or workplace, I would be a little more concerned, but it's public! Anyone could be sitting on a park bench watching you just like the camera is watching you. What's the big deal?
And how hard is it to carry a handgun from Ohio to Washington, D.C.? If guns are banned in Washington, D.C. but no one entering Washington, D.C. is checked for guns, then of course there will be wackos with guns there killing people.
If guns were banned in the whole country, so that the only way to get one would be to smuggle it in, it would be a lot harder for the wackos in Washington (no, I don't mean the government) to get a gun.
There's also software to do this with a webcam here. It claims to do facial recognition.
