I doubt he'll show any restraint OR thought for this sequence. IIRC, which I'm sure I do, the Obi-Wan vs. Anakin fight ended up in Anakin falling into a vat of lava, clearly indicating a fall from some non-lava surface.
What amazes me is that much of the coolness in Star Wars was absolutely NOT Lucas' doing. Has anyone played the West End Games version of SW Roleplaying game? I never really did, but I owned all the books. It's AMAZING how creative those people were, why can't Lucas take a page out of their book?
Gstreamer's plugin system is ideal for making a proprietary codec such as Real available to open source players, without having to open source or give up control of your codec.
It's not the CODEC clueless. Do you think they care, as far as users go, about their freaking codec? You can already play rm files in mplayer and elsewhere, all illegally. They don't want control of the codec they want the PLAYER. They want people to see ads, BUY their player (pro version) and listen to their radio stations ( free and not-free ) because that's one of their sources of revenue.
And why SHOUDLN'T they? Their a business besiged by MS and it/s WM* formats!!
I'm not sure why people are so anti-real player to be honest. It's the only player for linux that I know that legally plays all the different codecs.
They've started an open source project that further strengthens their commitment to linux, though I would like to see more, but how can you fault them? Here's a market that regularly uses questionable codecs constantly, yet Real is trying to make itself available legally in our market. Do you see Windows Media player for Linux? iTunes for linux? If you do, tell me because I don't know about them.
Also, this is a company who has been snubbed out of a market by MS's desktop domination... I mean.. lets see 99% of computers come with Microsoft WMP, and you're Real... what would YOU do?
And on another note, most of my friends in the AV industry have said that the Real codec is, if not the best, in the top two ( next to MPEG-4 ) in quality/compression. ( of the formats in relatively common use today ).
Now.. on the NEGATIVE side, this is VERY very alpha type stuff (Helix) from what I've seen and I'm not aware of a Real Mozilla plugin, but then again I've not googled for it.
The argument is, as it has been for a long time, deterrence.
If both the enemy and you have equal powers for destruction, you're both unlikely to unleash doom upon the other.
However, once someone creates/perfects a weapon that would make them impervious to the other, the balance is undone... Then either the enemy strikes preemptively to stop you from completing the weapon, or the impervious force can strike with impunity.
Usually the "preemptive" part is the bit that worries people over here. But whoever heard of a preemptive strike against someone for suspician of a weapons program?
Actually this article paints a poor picture of the interviewer.
Valenti seemed to be speaking well and acknowledging when he didn't know something whereas the ENTIRE rhetoric of the interviewer was:
Linux doesn't have a licenced player! You said it would! Waaahhh!
Well, I've got news for you. That's not HIS fault. There's a LOT of things that linux doesn't have. Especially "doesn't have LEGALLY". Is it his fault there's no market for a product that's ( as you so pointedly showed ) routinely circumvented for free and targetted at a small geekish market?
I want to build a Digital TV! Why can't I? Waaahhhh!
Well unfortunately he's right. No one cares about you. If you're building a TV you're either 1) a student, and therefore no one will pay attention to you unless you try to sell it, or 2) working for a company... WHO can pay for the licencing fees.
So far the only human creation to span many generations has been religions and the wars they involve.
to whit you reply...
Do a google search for 'gothic cathedrals' and 'gothic churches'.... trying to prove him wrong.
See the problem here? These are religiously inspired buildings.
n.b. - Most of which were built during monarchies where the only educated people were the overbearing clerics and upper class and the rest were peons. So sure, building a church sounds great when you're a peasant.
except that the docs suck and Qt is much better, yeah, great.
Qt is FREE as in beer and speech if you are writing OSS projects, so that's what counts. If you want free stuff for your commercial ventures, you ought to give credit where it's due.
if you read the QPL licence from TrollTech, you will stop worrying about this. There will ALWAYS be an Open Source version of Qt... even if TT goes bankrupt!
I don't know how one can read such scenes and argue that Tolkien advocates a demonification of enemies.
Everyone points out those lines. Unfortunately it's about a "southron" who are men deceived into fighting and not the orcs (who are decidedly black) and thus the pages and pages and PAGES of writing about how these orcs, sauron, etc. are ENTIRELY evil set against that one flimsy paragraph reveals the true mindset of the day. ( and the author ).
( i.e. - Enemies are to be pondered and pitied if they are like to us.. but if they are different.. definately entirely evil! )
Wrong. LOTR is all about how war can be forced upon a society and you MUST fight. But once the battle begins, noble intentions and ideals are thrown out the window. Neither the men, elves, dwarves, or orcs are any less brutal or more noble once the fighting begins.
I have to disagree. Most "tolkien armchair defenders" try to pull this stuff, but the truth of it is J.R.R. Tolkien seldom had any "grey area" characters. Probably Gollum, but that's about it. He was brought up in the early 19th century, was Christian, racist and narrow minded. His novels reflect this.
The "bad guys" are always "black, dark, gruesome" and completely evil. It's as 2 dimentional as it gets, unfortunately.
Oh, please. I will bravely take the dissenting opinion here and say, in a clear voice, that "The Lord of the Rings" just ain't that great a book.
Indeed. I heartily agree.
Tolkien's book is far from literary greatness. And I'm a fan! I like to curl up with the books, more from the sense of being a world i read about in my youth. And what a great sick/travel/vacation kind of book.
But great writing? Far from it. I find the language and the elvish writing to be more interesting than the elves themselves... and don't even MENTION the silmarillion!! ugg!
Heh, they didn't even cover the good ones such as the archers without bows, the refilling quivers, the "dead" orcs that flinch when stepped on etc. Bottom line is that in my opinion Mr Jackson is not a very good director, its the actors, cinimatographer and art department that should be getting the credit for the LOR movies. They are good despite Peter Jackson and not because of him.
This is pretty obvious flamebait. How could Pete stop the orcs from flinching? etc. But I just want to say for anyone who has NOT watched the extended DVD and making of:
This opinion is so very wrong it's incredible. Peter oversaw several units at the same time... got virtually no sleep for months... worked tirelessly on these films for 7 years... and pretty much poured his heart and soul into the movies. I can't imagine anyone else who could pull these movies off. The actors, producers, even MSNBC idiots who interviewed him realize that he beat EVERYONE for amount of work put into the film. And what a cool guy too!

I guess you've never seen Totem then?

religion illuminates things that are by nature untestable, like morality, ethics, compassion, and love for our fellow man.
...and of course you can have compassion and not be religious OR believe in a god.
Ethics has nothing whatsoever to do with religion.

I'm an idiot, but i've blogged some thoughts on this. Can anyone tell me why this would be such a bad idea?
