What is company "C" to do? All of a sudden they are distributing software that *could* be in violation of the GPL...But is it really their responsibility to do so?

Yep. The company has three options; A patched version that does version checking, a static version against the old lib, or ask for permission from "B"'s author to continue using it under the LGPL.

What do they do about the copies already out there?

Welp, they're now potentially in violation of the license. You'd better give them all the newer version of the software that doesn't potentially infringe. (Or in the case of a special license exemption, do nothing at all.)

Before you start poo-poohing the GPL, this happens in commercial software and development tools frequently.

I'll respond to this. You can't. And even if you could have, it would be silly.

    1. Win2K is not suitable for 'classic' clustering. (No, wussy ass fail-over clusters do not count). However this was a Renderman cluster, so see point 2.
    2. The desired software was Renderman. While it does run on NT (and could be made to work, albeit unsupported on 2K) as of the newest rev, its only 73% as fast.. So, in order to do the same work, you'd need 36% more machines, plus the cost of each machine doubles (Renderman runs in half the memory spec as compared to the NT version. Not to mention the fact that they just blew another $300 on a 2K license, or in order to get a supported config, $310 to buy Win2K Professional and downgrade to NT4.).

That was why it was silly. This is why it was impossible.

    3. W2K didn't exist. Remember, they've been doing this movie since 1997.
    4. Even if Win2K did exist, Renderman only ran on Real Machines, AKA *nixes, at that point.
    5. Did you see a mention of x86? I sure didn't. All I saw was SGI. SGI systems can run Linux. SGI systems cannot run 2K.

Not quite right.. The reason the plutonium bombs (Little Boy and Trinity) were implosion devices is because they were initially afraid they couldn't scare up enough plutonium, and because having a totally sub-critical bomb was prolly a bit safer.. Yes, you can do it, but just barely. Capture from my WinTV PCI (Same chipset as the Pinnacle, in fact a Pinnacle even works with the WinTV driver and vice versa) is fine using simple compression (eg, MJPEG) on a K6-350..

However, DO NOT PLAN ON DOING ANYTHING ELSE DURING CAPTURE. Nothing. No popping in a CD and firing off even something as simple as workbone. Dropped frames will probably ensue. Shut down the services, including cron.

As for what distro to use, you can strip any of them back to a couple hundred megs with a careful install. Pick whatever you're comfortable with.

Video card, well, I've had a few, and they're all 'acceptable'. Best bet is to slap a decent scanline converter on the native VGA tho.. Crisper, and not as expensive as buying a new video card. (If it's shared memory video on board, even a cheap Rage Pro w/composite out is better.)

So a lawyer decides to make a name for himself, and sues, claiming the late fee was is so huge as to be illegal under state law (It isn't, or they wouldn't be trying to settle without a trial)

The proposed settlement? A $5 coupon for every customer, another $5 coupon for every customer that was charged the late fee, and a guarantee they couldn't charge more than a $5 late fee for two years. Total to the consumer? My guess is about four million bucks.
