  1. Re:Tweak the numbers! Tweak the Numbers! on Classes vs. Skills in MMOGs · · Score: 1

I have to disagree. It might be fair to say a small part of the MMO fanbase has Ausperger's, but I think the bulk of WOW world is either children (who aren't interesting) or adults who are more interested in teamplay.
I really think the most addictive part in WOW is the chaotic interaction of a five-man group in battle. It's like American Football - after the snap, all hell breaks loose.
The tactical situation really keeps you on your toes - especially if you play a tank. The tactics change depending upon the nature and number of the monsters you are fighting, the classes that make up your group and the choices your comrades make in battle. You also have to frequently discipline, train, and coordinate the pick-up groups (gently of course).
I am bored silly of grinding and I now won't play unless I can devote a few hours to run an instanced dungeon.

  2. Re:Bzzzttt!!!!! on Five Reasons Not to Use Linux · · Score: 1

I've been reading /. for years and still have not switched to linux. Why? Because it does not work on my hardware and I do not know the precise technical reasons why it does not work. I don't have the time to beg the community to fix it, nor am I a kernel hacker (I am a hacker in another field of endeavor). There is more than one piece of hardware that seems to not work BTW. I DO KNOW that the linux community is incapable of putting together an OS that the hardware vendors can write a driver disk for. In the Windows world, the hardware vendor can write a closed source driver and put it on their website or on a CD that comes with the hardware and the Windows computer can use it to make the hardware work. With Linux, if the install program does not seem to support your hardware, you gotta get involved with heavy wizardry. (If I remember correctly, the Driver on Demand project did not have the support it needs!) The Linux community refuses to build a kernel with a stable ABI. The community also seems to have a problem with closed source drivers. I don't understand why. I'll try installing a newer Linux version the next time my Windows machine gets 0wnzd or rots into oblivion (which unfortunately happens once in a while) - maybe next time, X Windows won't crash mysteriously and maybe I can find a driver for my scanner.

  3. Perfect Prior Art? on All Encompassing Patents · · Score: 5, Interesting

I might know the perfect prior art to get this one stopped. The US Chess Federation (and international chess organizations too, I think) have kept rankings of players for decades. Newbies generally start out at 1000, and Grand Masters might get well over 2000. (I made it up to about the 1500 level). The rankings are based on the results of games between ranked players. Beating somebody improves your rating and losing to somebody lowers your rating - how much you increase or decrease your rating depends on the difference in ratings. Also, many rated games were performed over the ancient predecessor of the internet - the postal system.
