Well, and just to add to this train of thought, walk through your local Best Buy or Fry's or whatever and take a look at the wasted shelf space for dvd media. As a retailer, you have to stock both formats, taking about twice the shelf space that's needed if you only have one format to deal with.
If you look at it this way, it is really absurd that there are 2 formats. Economic pressures will definitely reduce this to a single standard (now, exactly which one that will is what remains to be seen).
