  1. Re:sublight speed ;) on X-43A Hits Mach 7 · · Score: 1

Actually the record that was broke was the fastest air breathing vehicle. Rockets launched into space have to carry two propellents to achive those speeds. A ramjet scoops in oxygen from the atmosphere as the second propellent rather than carrying its own supply.

Seems kinda strange, I wonder if they blew it up so that no one can salvage it even it did wash ashore. There are explosives onboard the vehicle... since they had to blow up the plane during the last test.

  3. Still some tense moments ahead. on Spirit Rover Lands Successfully · · Score: 1, Informative

While the landing is surely good news, there are still a few perilous moments ahead. To be successful they first have to deflate the airbags, and open module up. Then they must deploy the solar panels in order to get power before sunset or the mission is over. Seems like i remember reading somewhere that they must get the batteries partially charged to survive the intense nights there on the martian surface.

Looks like a picture perfect landing for them so far.. I sure wish them luck.

  4. Just tough it out. on Best Way To Beat A Caffeine Addiction? · · Score: 1

I was a major caffeine addict for many many years. One day I just decided to quit cold turkey and let me tell you i felt horrible for about 3 days. After that it started getting easier, and now I feel 10 times better without all the caffeine. Before I quit when i got up in the morning i felt terrible and groggy until i got that first jolt of caffeine. Now when i get up after a quick shower I'm ready for the day. Other than the occasional coke.. (maybe one every two weeks) I've been caffeine free for about 6 months now.

What I find hard is that its not always easy to find non-caffeinated drinks where i work. We do have bottled water in the office, but the only place to eat close by only has caffeinated drinks.. and in Florida you don't drink the tap water unless you are really brave. Since I work on an air force base (cape canaveral / KSC) there aren't many other choices to eat other than to travel off base. So i have started bringing my own drinks to work and keeping them in the fridge, and just bringing the food back to the office to eat. Sure.. its a little extra trouble, but without all that caffeine... its worth it..

I feel 10 times better and get twice as much done in the morning, while all my co-workers are still dragging around the office waiting for the caffeine to kick in.

You seem to be forgeting about the recent Y2k bug issues. Sure the program still ran fine.. until 2000 came along. Companies were scrambling to find developers for languages not used any more. Its not easy to find a COBOL, Fortran, ada or (insert old ass programming language here) any more. A lot of the source for the programs was not available any more and not being developed, so many companies were suddenly faced with the fact they have to migrate to a whole new software package in a relatively short time.

Using software that is not still actively developed is asking for it. There are always going to be bugs that emerge no matter how solid the program is. And if the project is not still actively developed, then the only alternative (especially if you don't have the source) is to move to a different software package. Rather than to wait for that to happen... you should begin to migrate away from the software when it is no longer being developed. Of course there are exceptions to this, but i think there should be a plan or alternative in place so you aren't scrambling to fix a critical bug that sudddenly emerged in your software.

Fortunately in this case X is still being developed, looks like they are just moving a few of their developers around. But if the X project were ever abandoned there is no way it could continue to be used in the fashion it is today on linux. Given the fact that linux is just now starting to make inroads into the desktop market it is critical that all the components are still being actively developed.

  6. Re:No more Feb 29th? on Earth Travel On Time, Again · · Score: 2, Insightful

Leap year has nothing to do with with leap seconds. Leap seconds are added due due to the slowing of the earths rotational rate. A leap year occurs when an extra day is added because the earth doesn't orbit the sun at exactly 365 days. Its 365.25... so every four years a extra day is added to keep the calender in sync. A leap second however only keeps the clock in sync.
