As far as I know, gpg version 1.x doesn't try to download anything by itself. Maybe it's different for version 2.x, or some secondary software depending upon gpg? Regarding public key signing, http://xkcd.com/364/

I though it was interesting that one of the requirements for building the barrelfish-thing is GHC v6.8.2 (Glasgow Haskell). Although, from a quick look at it, I got the impression that the Haskell-stuff is used for various tools, and maybe not for the kernel itself. Using Haskell to write kernel modules is of course already a possibility for us Linux users (http://tommd.wordpress.com/2009/09/13/kernel-modules-in-haskell/) ;)

a lot like open source. And has been so for quite some time. I publish my results, stating what I have been doing and precisely how. If I can as many other people as possible to use my results and ideas, I will gain respect in the scientific community (a lot of references). Regarding the publication process, open archives such as arxiv have been gaining in popularity for a long time, see e.g. http://arxiv.org/show_monthly_submissions

Well, that $500 you "save" can almost buy you an EF70-200/4 or a EF17-40/4, both L-lenses and _very_ sharp. Or, that money could buy you a flash unit and a tripod, or ... If you dont have the extra cash, I would say that the russian hack makes the 300D a lot more interesting, at least for some people. No I just have to wait for the h4x0rs to make the 300D power on as quickly as the Nikon D70! :)

If you dont care much for large format cameras, it's also possible to obtain high resolution images with ordinary digital cameras by stitching images together, see earlier slashdot article. I.e. if what you are shooting doesn't move alot.

The amount of photons per unit area that hits the sensor or film, is proportional the size of the aperture relative the focal length (the inverse f/A value). Increasing the size of the sensor, keeping the field of view fixed and using the same relative aperture size, increases the number of photons sampled on each pixel. I'm not a optical systems designer, but I guess it can be difficult/expensive to build high quality large aperture lenses. I guess it should be weighted agains using a larger sensor.

Even with good lenses and modern low noise sensors, digital cameras has a rather narrow exposure range as compared to classical photography. Shooting with negative film you can get something like twice the exposure range, compared to any ordinary digital camera (i.e. you will be able to see more details in both the dark and light areas of your photo)
