    This is true. You have fewer possible approach directions of cars to consider. But the problem is: The laws encourage pedestrians to step out and cross whenever they feel inclined to, cars be damned. And for drivers watching out for pedestrians, its better to keep them in one area where we can keep an eye on them than anywhere in the middle of a block.

    As long as you are really looking, this works. But if you are just doing the hobo dash, asuming cars will stop for you; not such a good idea.

    Not in my town. The cars that run the red lights are invariably the ones doing a consistent 5 to 10 MPH under the speed limit. But they stop for nothing (not pedestrians, busses, baby strollers).

    I don't think the countdown timers make a bit of difference to them. I don't think they can see past their hood ornament.

    less than 100 years ago oceans were absolutely pristine

    100 years ago, sailors looked forward to tying up in the Hudson River. Because it was so polluted, the water would kill all the parasites (shipworms) that would otherwise burrow into wood hulled boats.

    We are working toward this. Given enough exceptions and inequities in the current bastardized US system, it will eventually be thrown out in favor of a single payer system.

    ... needs evidence of who was driving a car when it is caught in an infraction by automated systems. In some jurisdictions, not having clear evidence of the identity of a driver is sufficient to have the case thrown out. This is how they will get their evidence.

    If the car won't start without positive facial recognition, that rules out the duct tape over the lens fix.

    Sweden and some other northerly countries are probably situated in much better locations to observe minor climatic variations. A bit hotter probably doesn't mean much in the Midwest of the USA, where they already have long growing seasons. It means a lot where a few degrees can make the difference between sucess and failure of a crop and an entire society. And having such a sensitive indicator makes them better judges of past climate patterns.

    Now of course there are a lot of other things going on that could be contributing to this. Overuse of groundwater, damming of the Mekong, improper irrigation;

    All possible. And you need an answer in a timely manner. And if its going to be expensive to implement, you are going to need some level of certainy before your country invests millions in schemes to correct the wrong problem.

    I'm not a climate scientist and I haven't screened out those effects

    But if you were a climate scientist, everything would look like AGW. And if you were a hydrologist, everything would look like ground water mismanagement. It seems that every special interest requires its own scientific discipline in order to secure the most funding possible. Wouldn't it be nice if some experts with broad backgrounds could look at all the possible causes of a problem and arrive at an unbiased conclusion?

    Yes. The lenses produce a virtual image much farther (probably a few feet) away from the viewer's eyes.

    The economics of the broadcast business have changed and it's debatable that it could survive without this source of revenue.

    Everything else is moving toward a 'pay for viewer' model. Netflix and others want access to the last mile? Hand the money over to the ISP. Pretty soon, if you want people to watch your local broadcast crap, pay up or no viewers. The middle ground right now is 'must carry'. Its why we have all those shopping networks and whack-a-doodle Christian channels. Local broadcasters can join that club. Make your money selling vacuum cleaners or indulgences like everyone else.

    Aereo was just ahead of its time.

    This would be the case if your GSM phone only supported the two EU bands. Or if you mistakenly walked into a shop that handled non-GSM carriers (Verizon).

    Have a 4 band phone and go to an AT&T or T-Mobile shop (or reseller) and pick up a prepaid SIM. No problem. Your phone isn't carrier locked, as you can swap SIMs in the EU. Using that phone here will not be a problem here. Carrier locks are used if you buy a phone on contract (to keep you from skippig out on paying the phone subsidy). But if you own it outright, the carriers don't care.

    Ontario? OK, I'll cut you some slack. In the rest of the world, 'hydro power' refers only to power generated by hydroelectric plants. Not a term for electrical power in general. Storing hydro power is (in the rest of the world) typically done with a lake.
