  1. That does it! on Build Your Own Battlemech · · Score: 4, Funny

I'm turning my Sunbird into the Knight 2000... Anyone know where to get kevlar and titanium cheap?

  2. As seen on the Discovery channel on Pencigraphy: Image Composites from Video · · Score: 1

I saw a special on the Discovery channel where a bank robbrey in Britian was foiled because police were able to clean up the grainy, blurry surveilance camera footage using a similar technique.

I wonder how this could be used for stenography...

  3. Hiking + Guinness? on Linux Beer Hike Goes to Ireland · · Score: 1

After hiking around the rim of the Grand Canyon and Bryce, I drank lemonade by the quart and water by the gallon. I'd say the last thing you want after a long hike is a pint. Even Guinness! Unless, of course, the "Hiking" part of the excursion is "Hiking" to the local pub...

  7. NOOOO!!! on The Effects of Smoking on Your Computer? · · Score: 1

I worked in a University help desk for a while, and freelanced for a local computer store doing techy things, and I could always tell who smoked by the amount of dust caked inside the machine. This junk covers processor fans, heatsinks, gets gummed up in the power supply, edge connectors, everywhere. The local computer store started charging a half-hour cleanup fee for people who smoked at their machine. It is BAD, BAD, BAD! Especially on modern machines where heat becomes a real problem, the dust makes the heatsinks and fans much less effective. Remember, your computer acts like an air filter, if your room is dusty or smoke-filled, your computer is gonna try to filter all that out...

  8. Then I will dominate with my Data General Nova!! on Rebooting The World? · · Score: 1

We will revert back to computers that you can fix with a handful of transistors, resistors, and wire. Old computers are MUCH more robust than their modern counterparts, with discrete components and (mostly) off the shelf construction. Usually the only integrated component is the processor itself. Alternativly, I've got this '70s book that describes how to make a "Working Digital Computer" using paperclips, lamps, and cardboard toilet tissue rolls...

  9. Pay content - Free internet? on Micropayments: Effective Replacement For Ads Or ? · · Score: 1

I wouldn't mind paying for contenet if I didn't haveto pay for internet access. It's a bit like paying for cable, and paying again if you want programming.

  10. Good, Detroit power SUCKS. on Superconducting Cables To Carry Power In Detroit · · Score: 1

I didn't glean from the article if Detroit Edison is sponsoring the technology, Detroit Public Lighting, or Detroit Edison, the two major players. I assume it's Detroit Edison, as DPL usually operates with a deficit. This would be a boon for the stability of the grid, as the Detroit Public Lighting grid has had repeated, major problems in the last few years, mainly with their central distribution lines which feed the smaller lines running out to communities and schools. I hope the city of Detroit gets the hint and starts dissolving the antique public service.

If you have an ethernet connection why do you need a hard drive? There's supposedly a broadband solution available in Japan (AKA an ethernet card) and I belive a Dreamcast keyboard is available so you can use the lame Wince web browser. Just NFS your linux box's mp3 share and wack away!

  13. Union of ONE on Dot-Coms Say 'Unions Not Welcome!' · · Score: 1

I have my own Union. My company can fire me at any time, and I can come in, pick up my coffee cup, and say "I'm GONE" at any time. They'll be the one whose screwed, I can find another IT job anywhere, it'll take my replacement at least a few months to get up to speed on what I've been working on. I'm happy working here, if I'm not I'll quit and get another job. Employee/Employer loyalty is a fabrication of the unions, if a company is screwing you DON'T WORK FOR THEM.

  14. Audio Cassette Data Recorders on Can You Back Up Data On Audio/Visual Media? · · Score: 1

I have a device in which my Commodore VIC-20 may store and retreive data from a standard phillips type audio casette storage unit! These devices may revolutionize the way in which we consumers store and retreive large amounts of data. No longer will only large corporations be able to afford tape storage devices! You can store your hangman and typing tutor BASIC programs on regular Audio Casettes you can buy from any fine audio specialty shop for only $10 each!
