Do you really think Boeing or Airbus want a fully automated aircraft? Any bug or design flaw that causes an accident can no longer be blamed on the crew (who in a lot of cases can no longer defend themselves). The manufacturer will have to accept full liability, rather than dump it on the crew. I don't think they really want this. From what I have seen, both manufacturers have over confidence in their products reliabilty when it comes flight management & automation software.
