You think we are the land of free capitalism?
Well, we are more free, especially if you have a lot of money. Then you have a good deal of freedom, especially to pay for all the things that you need to pay for to get any license or permits. Yes, some of these things are in the public interest.
But you have the gov't's big message that we are in a new reality, after the Trade Towers destruction, necessitating a change to the way things are done, making Big Brother needed, to listen to or investigate whomever someone describes as a security issue without proving the need for it.
Actually, when it comes to purchase of large business, especially by china, I am kind of glad that it is looked at.
It would be interesting to see what really goes on behind these investigations.
Are you saying that the chinese people are capitalist at heart, or that the government there is?
My post will achieve a 1, I suppose, but I have to say this post by Duranda is bluntly honest and insightful. I think the former poster, talking about open source, is taking a page from the open source movement itself. If you take that view, then the open source has not yet achieved what it desires in terms of consumer handiness of use. That is yet to come.
It is clearly a crock that ms brings lower prices.
Mr. Gates has expressed his admiration for J.D. Rockefeller, so the practice of lowering price to achieve domination, then attempted control follows from that. But, even where there are a few dominant players, there often comes to be agreement to achieve prices where everyone profits, if a single company cannot achieve domination.
This has happened recently in the wood panel(plywood, OSB) market. It is in the music industry, in the car industry, too.
SerpentMage wisely observed that ms comes to a spot where people will pay for its products after it achieves domination some way, but then the price stays static, or about so, where they make a healthy profit.
The consumer ultimately controls the market, it is what we buy. We are not helpless, even if we are manipulated.
I think you would find that Mac users would pay for another office suite, if it properly communicated with the existing dominant suite.
I don't need that right now.
However, I am going to get hold of the OOo, and I think you should not generalise about Mac users. For one thing, it certainly is appreciated, the work that has gone in to making the OOo work on OS X. By the way, we do spend a dime or more on products.
So I hope that the Mac is not 'scratched off'.

Nigh onto Albert Camus, is your answer, I think, then closer to Yoda.
Now what of those who say they want for 'software that doesn't suck.' ?
There is an antithesis at work here, to the predominant OS, and so linux is about a struggle, clearly. For many, yes, for something that works well, for excellence. But it is in contradistinction, and it goes to the fount of unix.
I thought one really good point you have is that it is right where we live that we are free to, best to, "justify the reasons all yourself".
It does matter.
A Mac user for unix.

May you be spat upon by a camel.
