I am hoping some synth types are/ing here today....
Which would make a better OS for a software synthesizer:
1.BeOS
2.QNX
3.Linux with realtime patches/modules
3.Win98 lite
4.MacOS
Softsynths like Reaktor from Native Instruments are becoming comparable to professional synthesizers in terms of interaction, capability, and musicality. But so far it seems the OS's these softsynths run on are a limiting factor.
The ideal situation would seem to be an OS that has the graphical capability to present an interface for MAKING instruments, and then a working capability where the graphics are gone and you PLAY the instruments. Whizbang stuff for building the instruments, and simple multitimbral interface for using the built instruments...
As far as that kind of vehicle goes, I think the Carter Copter is more viable at this point. I feel this way for a NUMBER of reasons, but the most important is having something other than combustion engines to fall back on.
The Carter Copter (CC) uses an internal flywheel to store energy prior, and during flight, eliminating the dead-man's-zone; the zone in which you don't have enough height to get the rotor into auto-spin- to slow your descent. The flywheel is so efficient, supposedly from the site, that you can cut the engine and still have enough internal energy to jump straight up 40 feet, and go down the runway 300 yards, and then land safely --All without combustion.
Having that potential energy as a reserve during flight is a beautiful thing!
Solotrek looks cool of course, but like the moller skycar- if your engine dies- you're fucked, fucked, fucked and then some. Yeah, they'll put a ballistic parachute in them but repairs will be expensive vs. just landing it.
Anyone know what insurance for these vehicles will cost? I'm sure thats just what DaVinci would azk....:)
No, yer not alone. I wish there was more warning about this kind of thing. The event here looks really cool, and I wouldn't mind learning a few things, drinking some fine suds and doing some hiking.
I don't know too many geeks, and events like this would be great to find out what other people are working on- or what they find interesting. Slashdot had that kind of attraction, but the trolls are ruining it.
When I went to highschool, the troll types would just get a kick in the head and that would be it. This community will fully mature when we are allowed to not only moderate each other, but POLICE each other. Maybe this is already happening in some online-tribal-gang sort of way...I wouldn't know because I don't hang with that many geeks. For all I know there are clans out there figuring out where this crap is coming from, and taking them down.
At least going to 'live' linux events you can be pretty sure of hanging with authentic people who love technology and the best operating system in the world.
But then again, what does distributed really mean? Does it mean working across multiple workstations? Or processors? I guess what is meant is a dynamic distributed OS?
Maybe it depends on the degree of distribution and what parts are actually distributed?
I don't know alot about this technology, but it seems that once censoring becomes accepted for things so 'obviously' objectionable, like porno; that censoring would then extend to other subject matter.
There are opportunities in this kind of software to control alot more than a child's online wanderings.
It would be a drag to have children exposed to recreational defecation before they learn to properly wipe...
But even worse, is to encourage people to accept censored versions of the world. And that is what things may come to.
We have so many cultures all over the world that each their own taboos, areas of sensitivity. Supposedly they are important to their own cultural identity. Each culture will want its own version of that nasty internet. Whether its stripped of african breasts, or american democracy.
The internet will lead to the homogenization of many cultures and the relaxation of certain token immoralities.
Censorware beyond porno will keep your kids stupid and prevent them from joining the global culture that will emerge. The culture that SHOULD take responsibility for these affairs. Here in America its ok to start your own religion where you can tell kids that people like Hawkings are heretics. But its wrong to let them see breasts.
I'm sure I've repeated what other have said....sorry if I bore...
Cmon man. Dr. Pepperberg is funded. People alot smarter than you read through her proposals and gave her money to do this work- a long time ago. She has since justified that investment by demonstrating parrots score on par with chimps, dolphins and five year old kids on iq tests. They measure a quotient- not intelligence or comprehension.
If you get hit by a car and experience severe brain trauma, rendering you less intelligent; therapists may use her techniques to train you how to piss in a hole.
You give humans way too much credit, and you also have a very narrow idea of intelligence- which to date has not nearly been properly defined.
Speaking with animals helps us understand language, cognition, perhaps intelligence; but also gives us clues about our own evolution.
It is unreasonable to expect that earth would only produce one sentient species. We need to know more about this so we can be responsible as earth's ambassadors.
Read the article next time....her research does not involve vivisection.
What about drive-ins?????

Movies Online?

It seems we are pretty worried about the theater venue waning?
What about drive-ins?
The closest thing we have in Chicago is the Vic theater. Its an older style theater and they play three movies in a night, two bars, popcorn and pizza.
The first time I went, I saw south park, Austin Powers2 and the matrix- all in a row - friggen great time. Beer and pizza whenever you want and it was packed full of rabid fans. Like going to see Rocky Horror picture show at a state school. This is a great movie experience, and it proved that I do actually like seeing movies with other people.
I mean, its not like philosophy club, but its a damn fine time.
If you are ever in Chicago- check out the Vic, they have good Music concerts too!
"...the chinese gov't can't lay their hands on web sites located overseas."
You think they have not tried?
If there were state secrets purported to exist in a server in the US or an offshore haven, would the chinese government discourage its own agents from retrieving the information?
Hush hush?
Of course they want to use an Open Source operating system. They won't write an OS for themselves...lord knows they could.
I wonder what they think of oakleys, VW bugs, mountainbikes and casinos...hell, they could consult over the net and get paid real american dough. Thats really the threat to the chinese gov.
"and lost it because I didn't have some sort of a musical sketch pad to jot it down on."
Notation has been around for a long time. All you need is pen and paper.
This will be yet another technological crutch for those of us (myself included) that have problems adopting or internalizing modern notation into our writing.
There are people who would never need these things...?
"Why does everything have to turn into a slam against Microsoft?"
It wasn't.
It was a jibe about the 'people' that use their products. Sorry for being so boring.

Whoops, MustardMan already got it...sorry.
I know its a different program, but why couldn't we spend this kind of cash on a supercollider?
How many telescopes do we need?
We need more particle accelerators, not telescopes. What difference does it make probing the universes' interior if you don't know how atoms work?

Aren't distributed operating systems inevitable?
But then again, what does distributed really mean? Does it mean working across multiple workstations? Or processors? I guess what is meant is a dynamic distributed OS?

We should ask Jane!
Jane? Oops, forgot to put in my earplug...

Exactly.
This crowd has seriously gone downhill...
Read and THEN post...or get back to work.
-Sleen
How did this post get moderated to 3?
He doesn't give the investigator credit for understanding a scientific control.
This needs to given a score of 1 for being no more than an UNINFORMED OPINION!!!!
Get it together moderators...and if you are clue free about a subject -
Let the points sit!!!!
-Sleen
Where are the sophisticated savvy slashdotters I came to respect?
This place is becoming a joke.
Show some spine and moderate someone down for being off-topic, stupid or abusive.
Thats IT!
I know what I'm doing with my moderator points from now on.
Smarten it up folks, we have a reputation to maintain...

Instead of expecting full length features, another much more viable possibility are film "shorts".
Usually within 10 minutes or so, this film format is great for the web- obviously.
There are a few sites that have come a long way to maturing the short format.
http://www.ifilm.com
http://www.pop.com
http://www.z.com
Support the starving filmakers!!!!!
-Sleen
I agree.
It is surprising there is no mention of a test flight.
He is obviously inexperienced with putting his own life in danger.
We can guess what will happen...oh well.
-Sleen
Thanks for the run down...from someone who wishes he was there for the demo, and Linus- thanks.
-Sleen
Aha thats right...
Actually I have not installed a modem under linux yet because I'm spoiled with great network connections. My bias.
Sorry.
Is that the only real reason?????
ISA slots?
Why even bother with ISA Slots?
I guess you have to include them if your system is supposed to be a low cost solution. But why more than one? For compatibility purposes?
Is there a reason it has to have ISA????
Sorry if i missed something obvious...
-Sleen
Hemos Dude!
Congratulations!!!

Why don't they have a clue about cooperating with each other? Every other regime has made its own concessions...
When will they be free?
And was it linux that was named its offical OS?
Thats a shame.
