  1. Re:The real takeaway on VMware "Miles Ahead" of Microsoft Virtual Server · · Score: 1

Not true at all. Instead of buying a new server or ghosting an existing machine you can deploy a template. VMware trots out the Discovery channel folks quite a bit, they cut down requisition time for a new server from 1 week to a few hours.

Sure you have some problems occasionally, a vmdk might get locked on ESX or an unsupported guest like Debian take some work to get up and running. But if you lost a machine all you need to do is restore the VM and you're up and running again and only had to wait for your tape drive.

Maybe you do need more personel. But if you do it's only because you're able to run more machines in less physical space with a lower hardware cost than before.

  2. Zawodny's comments taken out of context on Is Yahoo Actively Supporting Adware? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Great article, it almost got the context of Zawodny's comments correct. In his post he was talking about the bundling of the Yahoo Search Toolbar with other Yahoo products. Adware was not mentioned once. http://jeremy.zawodny.com/blog/archives/005121.htm l

Just grab a handful of Linksys WRT54G's and buy a copy of Sveasoft's firmware which adds WDS support. You can also boost the output power to 251mw. $75 per router, $20 for support from Sveasoft, and you're set. You'll need to work out weatherproofing and power though. weather proof wrt54g

  5. Agata Report tool on Replacing FileMaker with Free Software? · · Score: 1

Agata is a PHP-GTK report generation tool, with versions available for Linux and Windows. It still doesn't come close to being easy to use for non-technical (or even technical) users - unlike FileMaker. There is an API available, so after you've spent 2 months replacing all your Filemaker forms with PHP pages, it will only take another few weeks to convert your current reports.

  6. Re:SpeakEasy = Not Terribly Evil on How Much Broadband Usage is Too Much? · · Score: 1
First off, let me say I don't work for Speakeasy or represent them in any way. I've had Speakeasy for over a year and their Moderations of Use policy states:
Bandwidth: As an ISP, Speakeasy's bottom line is determined partially by the amount of bandwidth customers utilize. Speakeasy can normally balance that cost and utilization while continuing to provide great service to all customers. Customers will not be charged for the bandwidth consumed, nor do we have specific limits or caps on that bandwidth. If you utilize any of your Speakeasy services in a manner which consumes excessive bandwidth or affects Speakeasy's core equipment, overall network performance, or other users' services, Speakeasy may require that you cease or alter these activities.
That said, I've downloaded over 100GB in a month before without any letter. Throw in 2 static IP's, 30min of downtime in a year and 768kb upload and I've found it hard to even consider cable.
