  1. Re:Unfortunately on Ripoff 101: Gouging Students for Textbooks · · Score: 5, Interesting

Think $100 is bad, I had to spend over $300 for a set of books for my signals & systems class. The books were mostly useless because the professor handed out her own homework assignments rather than take them from the books. Turns out I couldn't even sell them back at the end of the term because they were going to a "new edition" which consisted of a few new figures and maybe two new pages of info.
Needless to say, the class had one hell of a bonfire to commemorate that piece of shit.

Seeing as how SCO has to pay their lawyers in stock, thankfully they wont have the cash to buy themselves any new laws.

Apparently the only tactic left to them is whining. Hopefully their end is in sight.

It's probably not recommended to have a device cooking up some grits when there's no one there to keep an eye on it.

Handy grits recipe that doesn't take much time.

    2 cups water
    1 1/4 cups milk
    1 teaspoon salt
1 cup quick cooking grits, not instant
    1/2 cup butter

In a small pot, bring water, milk, and salt to a boil. Slowly stir grits into boiling mixture. Stir continuously and thoroughly until grits are well mixed. Let the pot return to a boil, cover pot with a lid, lower the temperature, and cook for approximately 30 minutes stirring occasionally. Add more water if necessary.
Grits are done when they have the consistency of smooth cream of wheat. Stir in half the butter and serve on Natalie Portman with remaining butter divided equally on top of each portion.

While it would be cool to learn something new in a dream, I don't think you could learn anything while dreaming that you didnt already know. Dreams take place entirely in your own mind and I don't think you could learn any new information this way if you didn't already know it.

By making the radio generic, you lose that connection.

Here in Detroit, one of the top rated morning shows is done by local DJs. The Drew and Mike show on WRIF consistantly beats similar syndicated shows such as Howard Stern or Bob and Tom. They are always involved with Detroit sports and local news stories, more than the others and the listeners seem to respond to that. They have been doing their show for about ten years now and have a very large fan base

I think local radio will always have an edge over the nationally syndicated shows because of the greater flexibility. The syndicated programs have to stick to tighter schedules to the affiliates can fit in their commercial breaks and start their mid day programming on time. Drew and Mike regularly stay on past their usual time without a problem and don't need to plan every single commercial break in advance. This kind of schedule makes for a more entertaining program in my opinion.

  9. Re:Paid? on TruSonic Uses MP3.com Catalog As Muzak · · Score: 1

The artists are apparently being paid royalties for the songs based on number of plays but I doubt the money will be anything worthwile. From a link in the article

Playlist preference and selection is based on our clients' needs and discretion. Royalties are calculated based on the number of times your song(s) are included in one or more playlists. As TruSonic grows the business, the royalty fund may be re-evaluated and any fair and necessary adjustments will be made.

    Fair and necessary. Right.
