exactly, to submit the standard, ms had to specifically remove the codec from its proprietary 'vault' and make it publically licensable. after the years of development that they've put into their video compression, this is quite the move for them - considering that years ago the idea of a microsoft standard was simply breaking existing ones with proprietary extensions. frankly the video compression is the ONE thing that microsoft gets right. not that i want ms tech in my dvd player mind you.

the difference that you fail to point out is that if a closed-source vendor makes this 'choice for you', there is very little/nothing that you can do (opposed to running emulators or 'reverse engineered' systems like wine).

this is yet another 'plus' for open-source. this action would punish sco as a company, get additional publicity for the action, AND still leave sco users (the poor saps) to make the decisoins for themselves.

global directory of open source projects? sounds like we need some kind of directory of open-source (and commercial?) software names so us developer-types can check to see if our prospective project names are already taken? just a thought. of course google always work too ;P

if you have people that are willing to partner on an idea, you can make it happen.

our company has software we've been selling for 6 months now, it's not making us rich, but it's building up slowly to the point that the 2 principles involved (myself and my partner) will be able to live on it rather well within the year.

it's all about drive and creativity.

if you say it's 'not gonna happen', then frankly, it ain't gonna happen.

just because someone else got millions of financing for a project, does NOt mean that this much money is required by any means.

This has caused me alot of debugging time as a a result of typos because of this... of course a properly-secured php setup won't allow this, but by default php will allow this - and cause you problems either way. i am personally FOR case-sensitivity, you can tell a lot from a proper naming convention using case-sensitivity. plus 'most' operating systems (with one major difference) will properly enforce case-sensitivity for files your program may be accessing (or compiling), so this should carry across to the programming language for the most part.

no not at all, that's what he originally mentions as a possible way to avoid the confrontation with sco, but if you follow the thread, a number of followup posts point out (properly) that SCO has threatened to go after the bsd's as well afterwards, and as such, moving to bsd is not a real 'fix' for the threat. his response is, under the circumstances, the only proper one - force sco to show their hand, and if necessary, move towards legal action (injunction against them similar to what happened in europe) and/or counter-suits.

i don't really agree - doing the research necessary to refute claims like sco are making, especially if your primary business is NOT linux-oriented (ie a sports store that happens to use linux), takes a lot of time and energy. ignoring sco does no one any good, if you can force sco to be the ones 'ignoring' your questions, then your case is bolstered considerably if/when sco inevitably tries to push the situation via legal maneuvers. otherwise you are seen as 'uncooperative' in the court. anyone that's tried to ignore a creditor for example, and then tried to argue otherwise later on is well aware of the difficulties in 'ignoring' someone and how it may bite you later on. his respose was entirely reasonable and justified. sco IS wasting everyone's time, trying to push through these types of threats before they have even resolved the issue of whether they truly 'own' the IP rights they are trying to threaten us based on.

Don't sign anything, don't hand over any money, make no representation that you intend to agree with their demands, just keep them talking until you have enough evidence to hurt them with.
