  1. Re:Metric Metric Metric on How Much Does A Cloud Weigh? · · Score: 2, Informative

Never underestimate the size of one square meter.

One square meter has 10.000 square cm (100 cm * 100 cm).

    Total area is 500 * 10.000 = 5.000.000 cm^2

    Mass is 3 * 5.000.000 = 15.000.000 g, or 15.000 kg, or 15 (metric) tons.

    About 2.5 elephants.

  2. My Audi runs on Biodiesel on Alternative-Fuel Vehicle Recommendations? · · Score: 2, Informative
All recent Audi cars with a diesel engine can run on Biodiesel, which is a clean fuel made from rapeseed. Most other diesel car can use Biodiesel too, some require minor modifications.

    Advantages of using Biodiesel:
    • it does not contain sulphur, thus the exhaust is less aggressive to the engine and the engine last longer.
    • it is CO2 neutral because the rapeseed converts exactly as much CO2 as is released later when burning the fuel. An electric car however needs electricity, which is made burning coal or natural gas or nuclear fuel.
    • it is cheaper than the mineral oil diesel, at least in Germany. We have lots of biodiesel gas stations too.
Some papers on advantages and technology:

And yes, I'm very happy using Biodiesel in my car and can recommend it to everybody else.
  3. Re:Not userfriendly on Two Steps Forward for Linux Multimedia · · Score: 2, Interesting

    Yes, Kino is user friendly:

"I don't like this scene": Type "dd".
"Go to next scene": Hit return, or arrow down key.
"Delete from here to end of scene, it's only getting worse": Type "d$".

Many users don't need more commands, and it is fast.

  4. Re:small cases? on Choosing a Good Case · · Score: 1

I have built two Spacewalker computers: the SV-24 and the SV-25. They match all your requirements, with the exception of "flat" (they are cubes).

They come with rather cheap and noisy fans. I replaced all of them with Verax fans for the case and CPU and a Papst fan for the PSU.

The SV-24 has a Cyrix 900 MHz CPU. I plan to try passive cooling, as this CPU uses only about 10 W and can take about 80 C, much better than a Celeron or Athlon/Duron. On the other hand, these Verax fans are so quiet that you do not hear them anyway, so it is somewhat pointless to remove the fan.

ieee1394 is ideal for connecting camcorders and digital cameras to a Linux system.

This link has an extensive list on ieee1394 interfaces and other hardware compatible with the Linux ieee1394 driver

Here's a link list to other 1394 and digital video related projects.

The same website hosts the dvgrab and Kino applications. dvgrab is a command line utility which downloads from a digital video camcorder. Kino is a small non linear digital video editor application, can download and upload movies from and to camcorders.

The ieee1394 drivers are still considered experimental. I have good results using the version in the 2.4.12 driver, but I can't really recommend the Linux ieee1394 drivers for anything critical. Please read the IEEE 1394 Driver for Linux Homepage.

Another interesting digital video editor program is Kino (http://www.schirmacher.de/arne/kino/). It uses vi commands for editing the movie, so it is very easy to use (but it has menu commands too).

The latest version (CVS only, not available as tarball yet) has a much improved user interface. However Kino is still in its early phase, it has no titling, effects etc. yet and it can process only video grabbed from digital video (DV) camcorders.

  10. Linux DV editing on What Do You Use For Digital Video Editing? · · Score: 2
Here's how I did a 15 min. DV video last weekend:

On my Linux system I saved about 20 min. worth of raw digital video footage using a little command-line only utility: dvgrab. Not even one dropped frame, all scenes separated neatly into individual files. About 4 GByte total.

After that I edited the video using Windows98 and ULead VideoStudio 3.0. It crashed only once. Right now it is rendering the final MPEG movie.

    The hardware, not exactly state-of-the-art:

a 5 year old PC with an AMD 333 MHz, 64 MByte RAM and a 10 GByte IDE disk

    a 1394 card (EXSYS-6500, about $100 including software)

    Sony PC-100 DV camcorder

Currently I am looking for a programmer who could help writing a DV codec. When we have this, we can do basic DV editing completely using available Linux software. The major missing component however is the codec. If you have some knowledge in this area, please send an email.

I have a Sony F500 (the one with the flat tube)and I certainly wouldn't buy it again. The first one I got was so badly out of focus that I returned it. The replacement monitor was not much better. When I got my original monitor back it was somewhat better adjusted but I still have convergence problems, especially at the sides.

Objects near the corners always have a colored shadow above, below or at the sides, about 1 pixel at the worst places.

Check out this monitor test program (needs Java, it is supposed to be os-independent). It displays a collection of grids, color bars, patterns etc.
